WHY IS CAREER MANAGEMENT SO IMPORTANT?

Not all employees will seek out promotion or new opportunities within Chivas or the Group, but for all of us the ability to adapt to change in our current role, to seek out new challenges and skills, and to build good working relationships is key to remaining fulfilled in our day to day work life. For those who do have the desire and capability to advance their career it is key that line managers support an individual’s career goals through use of company processes such as i-move, career placements, etc., but perhaps more importantly, through great career conversations. Open and honest discussions build understanding of career aspirations and help to determine what skill gaps may currently exist that would prevent moving into a role immediately. Guide the employee to try and determine these gaps themselves, rather than doing the work for them. They also need to be clear about their own development requirements for any other role.

Feeling in control of their career goals and decisions, whatever these may be, helps employees feel fulfilled at work.

Don’t underestimate the value that these conversations have. Employees want to feel like they belong, that their role has meaning and that they have a bigger purpose towards the company’s success. Get these right and you’ll have a far more engaged team member.

Be supportive and invest in your teams career aspirations - this will build trust and credibility, plus assist in retaining your good employees.
