Phonemic Awareness
Level 1 Test
Rhyme Model: Words that rhyme have ending parts that sound the same. For example, cat and hat are words that rhyme. I am going to ask you for rhyming words. To practice, I will say a word. Then you and I will each say a word that rhymes. It can be a real word or a made-up word. The word is pan . A word that rhymes with pan is can . Now you say a word that rhymes with pan . Pause; accept any real or made-up word that rhymes with pan . Now you can try this on your own. Tell me a word that rhymes with: sit win pet take boat two Words in Sentences Model: I will ask you about words in sentences. I will say a sentence and then ask you how many words you heard. Let’s do one together. The sentence is Paul likes soup . I’ll count the words on my fingers: Paul —one— likes —two— soup —three. There are three words in the sentence. Now it’s your turn. • Dogs bark . How many words do you hear? Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (2).
• Cows chew grass . Pause. Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (3). • My nose itches . Pause. Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (3). • Airplanes fly . Pause. Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (2). • Anyone can play . Pause. Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (3). • Doors open . Pause. Repeat the sentence; wait for the answer (2). Syllables in Words
Model: A word is made of parts called syllables . For example, the word lion has two syllables, li•on. To say the word, we blend the syllables together without stopping. I will say some syllables, like li•on. Then you blend them together to say the word: lion . Make the words from the syllables I say. sun•set pic•nic high•way mu•sic o•cean nev•er Onset and Rime Model: Every word has a beginning sound. I am going to say a word, and then you tell me the beginning sound. For example, if I say the word mask , you would say the beginning sound /m/.
