Group 2 recommendations: Students in this group are accurate but performing below benchmark rate. This group of students needs instruction in the targeted skill of fluency. Students in this group need practice with sounds, phrases and connected text. Repeated readings are recommended with retelling and summarizing text to support comprehension. Setting goals and graphing rate will support the building of automaticity with these students.

K- PALS contains systematic activities to improve early reading skills phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. Cost— available at the District Teacher Resource Center for order. ~$2.00 per book. Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) is designed to provide systematic and explicit instruction in phonological decoding and comprehension practice. An Instructional alignment is found in the map which identifies lessons appropriate for this group. It may also be used with larger groups for at-risk student populations. Cost: $ 64.95 from the publisher Lesson Plan 1 st grade or Lesson Plan for 2-5 using the Reading Street RtI Kit to deliver lessons focused on Fluency. Cost: Small Group Manual provided at HYPE or New Teacher orientation. ~$22.00 at Teacher Resource Center. Decodable Resources available online or ~$2.00 per book ordered from the Teacher Resource Center. Reading Street TE contains pages at the end of each week for On Level small group instruction one lesson per day. No Cost For current users only 2 . Purpose is to build reading fluency. Students do repeated readings, in pairs, of one-minute nonfiction passages with partners. Number of words read correctly are graphed. Students are encouraged to retell for text comprehension. *Program after training is recommended as a practice station.
