JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach

Beginning his 20th season as head coach of the Univer- sity of San Diego baseball program, John Cunningham has guided the Toreros from a NCAA Division II power to one of the top programs in the Southern California Baseball Association (one of the best baseball con- ferences) and the NCAA Divi- sion I ranks.

A native of San Diego, Cunningham attended St. Augustine High School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiv- ing AII-CIF honors in base- ball and led the County in scoring during his senior year basketball season. Cunningham attended the University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the National Jesuit Honor Society, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. Degree in History as well as a general secondary credential. In basketball, John was named to the All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American teams. Baseball cornered him a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's " Athlete of the Year." John began his career at USD in 1962, with 1981 seeing him win his 400th game. From 1969 through 1982, the Toreros have compiled eleven winning seasons out of thirteen. His teams have won thirty or more games five times, first in 1971; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981 . Four of his teams have gone to post-season play-offs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named District 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place (14-12) finish in the SCBA. His 1980 Torero team finished the year at 30-25-1 (14-14 SCBA) and, in 1981 USD finished the year 30-15-1 and a fourth place finish in the Conference with a 15-12-1 record. Last year was USD's first year under the .500 mark in SCBA action with a 13-15 record and a 29-24-1 overall mark. Besides coaching baseball, John works for the National League of the Major League Baseball Association as the San Diego Padres official scorer. He also works for the Na- tional Basketball Association as the San Diego Clippers of- ficial scoreboard operator. John and his wife Nancy were married in May of 1978. He has a stepson, Geoffrey, age eight.

JOHN GUNTHER Assistant Coach

Coach Gunther will be begin- ning his fifth season as the Toreros pitching coach. John graduated with a degree in sociology from U.C. Santa Bar- bara, where he played catcher for the Gauchos. He then received his Masters in Physical Edu- cation from the University of the Pacific. After one year of semi- pro ball, he spent a few years at various coaching assignments before becoming pitching coach for two seasons at San Diego State. He then spent four years at Mesa College as an assistant, before coming to USD. John and his wife Diane reside in San Diego with their three sons, Scott (10), Paul (7), and Tim (4). Coach Saverino will be in his 1st year of coaching at USD, and it will be a short one at that. Mike will help coach the first half of the season before becoming player-coach for the California Angels minor league system later this spring. It will be Mike's third year as an infielder with the Angels and his first as a coach. Mike graduated from USD in 1980 with a degree in Behavioral Science. As a four year starter for USD, Mike holds five USD records and can be found in the top three of numerous Torero records. In 1980, Mike was MVP while batting .323 with 55 runs scored, 63 hits, 55 walks and 14 sacrifice hits. Mike is single and resides in San Diego. 3 MIKE SAVERINO Assistant Coach

1983 USD PROSPECTUS

Last season saw the Toreros finish under the .500 mark in the Southern California Baseball Association for the first time since their inception in 1979 with a 13-15 record and 29-24-1 overall record. The Toreros are anxiously awaiting the 1983 season, however, they will have to overcome the loss of several key personnel. Gone are All-League pitcher Glenn Godwin (14-4, drafted by the Oakland A's), Andy Asaro (.303 B.A., 5 HR's and 44 RBl 's) and six other pitchers that accounted for 12 more victories. Senior Chris Ciampa is the only experienced pitcher returning with a 3-2 record from '82. Top returners for Coach Cunningham include senior catcher Steve Sciacca (.298 B.A., 4 HR's and 44 RBl 's) and senior leftfielder Andre Jacas (.280 B.A., 41 runs scored and 35 stolen bases). At the corners, sophomore Laci Nagypal returns at 38 (.316 B.A., 10 doubles) while sophomore Eric Bennett looks to be the starter at 18. Up the middle, senior second baseman Bruce Tomlinson (.984 fielding percentage) and sophomore shortstop Paul Van Stone (.362 B.A.) are back to turn the double play and clog up the middle defensively. 5th year man John Mullen will be back in rightfield after batting .301 and a team leading 7 triples. In centerfield, freshman David Jacas has earned the starting position after a fine winter perfor- mance. David was drafted in the 13th round by the New York Mets. Success this season will depend heavily on how well the new pitching crew comes around. Besides returnee Chris Ciampa, Coach Cunningham is counting on Junior College transfers Mike Fazekas (9-3 and MVP at San Diego Mesa) and Russ Applegate (9-3, 1.59 ERA and 97 K's at Palomar College) to step in and help out immediately. Other returners are senior Kevin Cammall and sophomore Bob Cannady while newcomers to the staff include juniors Eric Sweet and Ken May, sophomore Mark Hawblitzel and freshmen Casey Morales and Ed Dauer. "Our biggest obstacle will be overcoming the loss of our starting rotation and left handed power hitting. We'll be strong defensively and better in the base running department. We'll have to play sound fundamentals and fight and scratch for everything. As always, we will be competitive in the Southern California Baseball Association," stated Coach John Cunningham.

John Mullen returns for his fourth season as a USO Torero. John led the SCBA in triples last season with 7 and batted .301.
