SETTING The Un iversity of San Diego is an independent Catholic instituti on of hi gher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campu s is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego. The campu s was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the vill age was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Chri sti ans recaptured the vill age centuries later and founded a uni ver– sity whose buildings became the inspi ration for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The USO campus is regarded as one of the most archi tecturally uni que insti– tutions in the country, featuring 18 maj or buildi ngs des igned in an ornamental 16th century Spani sh Renaissance sty le. Since 1984, USO has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A fi ve-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (I , I00 spaces) was completed in 1998 . A landscaped fountain plaza was fin ished in the fa ll of 1995 , connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Cen ter. In 1992, the uni versity completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , which in– cl udes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a faci li ty that offers the latest in informati on technology.

ACADEMICS

USO enroll s more th an 6,600 studen ts who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree pro– grams. The un ivers ity's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schoo ls of Business Admi nistra– tion, Education, Law and Nu rs ing. Class size general ly aver– ages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher rati o being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full -ti me fac ul ty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's co lleges and un i– versities, published by U.S. News & World Reporl, USO moved from the regional to nati onal category in 1994. The univers ity is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nation.

and much more. Students parti cipate in a wide range of volunteer proj ects such as adu lt literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and hou se building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life at USO with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS The Uni versity of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearl y all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Di vision I level. The football team is in its sixth year in the Pioneer Football League and the NCAA I-AA level. Women 's sports include : basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, so ftball , swim– ming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball , crew, cross country, golf, football , soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won fi ve conference cham– pi onships; made 17 post-season appearances; had sixteen Conference Coaches of the Year; twe lve Conference Pl ayers of the Year; ten Conference Freshman of the Year; three WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Year; and 18 NCAAAll-Ameri cans. This past year, Zuzana Lesenarova, a sophomore on the women's tenni s team, earned her second straight NCAA All-America honor after advancing to hte semifinals of the 1998 NCAA Individual Cham– pi onships -- she fini shed with a national ranking of 9th.

♦ The l J niwrsity of San Diego was selected h~· the .John Templeton Foundation for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes US four– year accredited undergraduate in– stitutions that emphasize character huilding an integral part of the col– lege experience. Foundation offi– cials made special mention of l!SD's "Ethics Across The Curriculum," a campus-wide initiaitw funded with a two-~·ear, $1]8,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation. l!SD is one of eight California colleges and unh ersities named to the honor roll.
