Torero Record Section 33 The Chet and Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame Two of the nineteen USD inductees to the Chet and Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame played football for the USD Toreros. Jan Chapman , Class of 1961, was inducted in 1995. Matt Maslowski, Class of 1971, was inducted in 2001. Jan Chapman was a three-sportletterwinner at theUnjversity ofSanDiego, but itwas football where he made a namefor himself. His three-year totals as quarterback included 2,573 yards and 23 touchdowns on 188-for-367 passing. His senior yearwas his best when he completed 85-for-167 passes foe 1,087 yards and 9 TD' s, ranking him 23 rd in the nation. Also as a punter, he ranked 3 rd in the nation his sophomore year(43 .8 yards per punt) and 6 th in his seniorcampaign (43 .2). He is the currentUSD season record holderfor yards punted (2,287) and average (43.8). Chapman is still rememberedfor leadingUSD toa2 l -20 upsetovertheMmineCorpRecrwtingDepotwhichtouted four future NFL stars. Chapman's leadership abilities were demonstrated on the field as welJ as on campus. As co-captain for football his senior year, he received the Gil Kuhn Trophy as theOutstandingGridder, given to the player that bestdemonstrated sportsmanshjp, performance in the highest degree, and leadership. He was also president ofthe Associated Student Body his senior year. Since graduating in 1961,Jan has stayed in theSanDiego area,giving back to the community by teachingandcoachingatthehigh school and commuruty colJegelevels. MattMaslowski, after playing football atMission BayHigh School andMesaCommuni ty College in San Diego, decided to continue his career at USD. At6' 3" and 205 lbs.,Matt dominated as areceiverforthe Toreros. During his first season, he was the leading club football receiver in the nation with42catches for799 yards in only seven games. Hiscollegiatecareerwascutshort in 1970dueto injury, but he still managedsomeremarkablenumbersduringhiscareer. Playing in only 11 gamesforUSD,Matthad80catchesfor 1,552 yards and 18 touchdowns. He averaged a remarkable 19 .4 yards per catch for theToreros. Becauseofhis size and speed, Matt was offered a free agent contract by the Los Angeles Rams and played for GeorgeAllen and Tommy Prothro. In addition to the Rams,Matt played for the ChicagoBears, M nnesotaVoongs and finished hi s careerwith the Florida Blazers oftheWorld Football League. At the requestofagroup ofstudents in 1969, the University ofSan Diego agreed to bring footbal l back eight years after dropping the sport. UnderCoach Jim Gray, theystartedaclubprogram. Matt and his teammates from theclubfootball team laid the foundation for a solid football program sti ll going strong.
