Practice the Concept: Select cell D1 , type the date June 1 and press [Enter] . Notice that Excel formats the entry as a date with a format of d-mmm. Select cell C1 and view the entry in the Formula Bar . The date displays in a different format in the Formula Bar .

U SING F LASH F ILL  D ISCUSSION

Flash Fill provides the ability to automatically fill a column with a subset of data that appears in another column. For example, column A contains the last names and first initials of several sales reps. If you want to separate the names into two columns, in column B, type the last name of the first person, press [Enter] , then begin typing the last name of the second person. Observe the preview for the remaining last names. Press [Enter] and the remaining cells in the column are filled with the last names.

P ROCEDURES 1. In the column you want to fill, type the information into the appropriate cell. 2. If Flash Fill does not start automatically, on the Ribbon select the Data tab and,

in the Data Tools group, click Flash Fill

.

NOTE If you do not want to switch to the Data tab to manually start Flash Fill, press [ Ctrl + E] .

S TEP - BY -S TEP Type sales reps’ last name and first initials in the corresponding cells and Flash Fill the remaining cells.

1. In row 5, in the Last Name column, type the sales rep’s last name. The name appears in the cell. 2. Commit the entry and return to Ready mode. The active cell remains in cell B5.
