USD Volleyball 1984
1984 USO VOLLEYBALL PROSPECTUS: With seven returning players from the 1983 team and four promising newcomers, the Toreras hope to improve on last season's 9-14 mark. Again USD will face a challenging ;,thedule, but coach John Martin hopes that his senior-laden lineup will fare well with the experience gained over the past few campaigns. Five of the team's returnees started regularly last year and another made frequent starts, so Martin expects his team to be solid throughout, with good leadership from the six seniors on the 11-player roster, and a maturity that should help out in the close contests. "We should also improve as far as consistency is concerned," Martin says. " Last year there would be major differences in our play from one match to the next. Player-wise, our real strength this year is our four strong, quick outside hitters. " Veronica Velez and Kim Crawford are the two seniors at that posi– tion, and will be joined by sophomore returnee Gina Trapletti and freshman Stephanie Van Haverbeke, a second-team All-Metro selec– tion at St. Mary's Academy in Portland, OR, last year. Velez led the Toreras in almost all offensive stati stical categories last season after transferring from Mesa Junior College. Seniors Marcia McEvers, Michele Rehrig and Jill Bradley are the team's middle blockers, with Bradley a first-year player after competing in basketball for USD. Setter Cindy Wheat is set for a strong senior cam– paign, and will be joined at the position by freshman Kris Mitchell from Elk, CA. The club's defensive specialists are junior Ellen Silber and sophomore Loretta O'Connor, a newcomer from South Laguna Beach.
