It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here to Kingspan Stadium for this Guinness PRO12 match against Glasgow Warriors.

I would like to welcome in particular our friends from Glasgow: directors, players, supporters and coaches. Glasgow will be without doubt the toughest side that we have faced so far this season. Last year’s finalists, they are top of the PRO12 and are unbeaten with five wins out of five. Gregor Townsend and his team have done an outstanding job at Scotstoun and we look forward to a fantastic match between these two sides. Last week, we defeated Edinburgh by 30 points to nil here at Kingspan Stadium. That result, against a dogged Scottish side, demonstrated the tremendous character that exists among these Ulster players and bodes well for the three huge matches that we have coming up, starting with Glasgow this evening. This week it was announced that Neil Doak has been appointed Ulster Rugby Head Coach and that Les Kiss will be returning in a year’s time as Director of Rugby. I would like to wish both Neil and Les my wholehearted congratulations. Neil has been at Ulster Rugby for the best part of two decades. He has coached at every level within the professional game at the Province and I am delighted that he has been appointed as Head Coach. The IRFU kindly lent us Les after the departures of David Humphreys and Mark Anscombe and he has made a huge impact in recent months. While we might be sorry to see him go in the

short term, the priority for Les and for everyone involved in the Irish set-up is the Rugby World Cup next autumn. We wish him well as he leaves us and look forward to him returning next November to begin his full time role with Ulster Rugby. The Ravens began their British and Irish Cup match this afternoon. If you are free next Saturday afternoon, why not warm up for Ulster’s Champions Cup game against Leicester Tigers by watching their second game in the competition, against Yorkshire Carnegie, here at Kingspan Stadium kick off 2.30pm? I would like to thank our host broadcaster for this evening, Sky Sports. The ‘Sky treatment’ is a phrase that is often used to describe the fantastic coverage that they give sport in the UK and Ireland. We welcome Sky’s cameras to Kingspan Stadium and thank them for their support of the Guinness PRO12. Finally, Tonight is a special night for our partnership with our Charity of the Year, Mencap. Fans have been urged to wear wacky socks and shoes and bucket collectors will be around the ground. Please donate as much as you can to this fantastic cause and help support Mencap’s ‘Big Step Forward’ appeal. I hope that you enjoy the game. Good Luck to Ulster and Stand up for the Ulstermen! Yours in Rugby. John Kinnear // President IRFU (Ulster Branch)

Chief Executive’s

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome back to more exciting rugby in Round 6 of the Guinness PRO12.

The 142 tries scored and the 4.73 average try per match to date is our highest ever since the tournament went ‘home & away’ in 2003/04. We have seen an increase in both attendances and TV audiences on last season so well done to all in providing entertainment on & off the pitch! Both teams’ supporters always add a lot of colour and noise to these occasions and their friendly banter warms up many a hostelry and stadium whenever and wherever they play ! Long may it continue! We wish all of our 12 clubs the very best of luck in the new European Rugby Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup which start next week. In addition to hoping all do well this year, there’s already a lot of interest in the qualification through the Guinness PRO12 for next year’s European tournaments which heightens the drama and excitement throughout this season too. We wish the players, coaches and match officials all the very best for what should be an exciting and entertaining match today!

ENJOY!

NEIL DOAK NAMED NEW ULSTER HEAD COACH

Ulster Rugby is delighted to announce that Neil Doak has been appointed as the Province’s new Head Coach, with immediate effect, until at least the summer of 2017.

COACHING ANNOUCEMENT

Doak has an almost 20 year association with the Province. He made his debut as a player in 1995 against Northern Transvaal and went on to make 76 appearances for Ulster before retiring in 2005. A talented all round sportsman, he also won 32 international caps for Ireland at cricket. He began coaching while still a player, becoming an Ulster Branch development officer in 2000. Following his retirement he worked with Academy players as a high performance coach. He led the Ulster U19, U20 and ‘A’ sides and was quickly promoted to the senior set-up where he took up a role as elite player development officer. He became backs coach in 2009 and is credited with transforming Ulster Rugby into one of the most potent attacking sides in Europe. His coaching ability was recognised by Ireland in the summer of 2013 when he joined Les Kiss and now Munster Head Coach, Antony Foley, in leading the Ireland international side on their summer tour of North America. This summer he and Connacht’s Dan McFarland coached Emerging Ireland to victory in the IRB Nations Cup in Romania. Commenting on his appointment, Neil Doak said: “I am extremely proud to have been appointed as Ulster’s Head Coach and to have been given this opportunity is a fantastic honour for me.

“I played all my rugby at Ulster and I have coached here now for more than 14 years. I am proud to be from this Province and my aim over the next three seasons is to get the best out of our players and to help deliver success.” Ulster’s Chief Executive, Shane Logan, said: “In looking for a new Head Coach we sought someone with passion, integrity and the ability to drive Ulster forward. Neil has all those qualities in abundance. “I am extremely pleased that someone who has invested so much into rugby in the Province has now earned the right to be the Head Coach of the senior team. “We consulted widely on the best candidate for this role and no matter who we asked, whether it was players, management or staff, the same answer kept being given – the best person to be Head Coach at Ulster Rugby is Neil Doak. “Over the past four seasons we have improved continuously and Neil has been instrumental in that growth. I have absolutely no doubt that he will be hugely successful in the coming years.”

LES KISS TO RETURN AFTER RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015

IRFU Confirms Les Kiss to return to Ulster after Rugby World Cup 2015

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY ANNOUNCEMENT

After the abrupt departure of David Humphreys, followed by Ulster Rugby’s decision to release Mark Anscombe, the IRFU provided Les Kiss in the role of interim Director of Rugby for the province. Les Kiss will leave Ulster next week to take up his full- time coaching duties with the National Team as they prepare for the Guinness Series, Six Nations and Rugby World Cup 2015. At the conclusion of the RWC 2015, Les will return to Ulster in a full-time role as Director of Rugby. The IRFU believes that the experience and expertise provided by Les Kiss post RWC 2015 will aid the coaching group at Ulster and will also help to develop players. Les Kiss said “I am very appreciative of the continued faith the IRFU and Ulster Rugby have demonstrated in me and, while I’m delighted to get the security in the long term, I am very much focused first and foremost on the next 12 months. It’s exciting that the Springboks arrive here in less than three weeks and that the Guinness Series is almost upon us. The National coaching team have remained in close contact and Joe has been particularly supportive of my dual roles over the last few months, which has made things a lot easier for me.” Ireland Head Coach, Joe Schmidt, is enthusiastic about his coaching colleague’s future post, but is staying short term focused “Les is tremendous value and his integrity, coaching ability and positivity will add definite value to Ulster in the long term. But, like the rest of the National coaching

team, we are both very much focused on the upcoming Guinness Series. Beyond that there are plenty of challenges leading up to Six Nations and RWC 2015.” Ulster CEO, Shane Logan expressed his appreciation for the support offered by the IRFU and confirmed: “We have finalised the coaching structure that we wish to have in place and are in advanced negotiations to recruit based on that. We will also announce a team manager to bridge the gap prior to Les taking up his role allowing him to be fully committed to his coaching duties with the National Team.” Finally, IRFU Director of Rugby, David Nucifora, reiterated the IRFU’s commitment to supporting the province in saying that “Les is an ideal fit for Ulster and did a great job guiding them through a disruptive period. He will head back there post RWC 2015 but is totally committed to the National programme over the next 12 months.”

ULSTER TAKES ‘BIG STEP FORWARD’ WITH MENCAP

Every match at Kingspan Stadium is different, but there are some things that stay the same...

OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNER 2014/15

The pre-kick off chat amongst supporters, the anticipation, the roar of the crowd as we ‘Stand Up for the Ulstermen’, the edge-of-your-seat stuff in between, the hoping for a win and experiencing the craic. And tonight is no different as we welcome Glasgow Warriors to Belfast for this Guinness PRO12 game, except for one big thing. This is the first game that Mencap in Northern Ireland can proudly stand up and say that we are Ulster Rugby’s Official Charity Partner for the 2014/15 season. Mencap’s Big Step Forward Appeal This is fantastic news for people with a learning disability, as Ulster Rugby will be supporting our Big Step Forward Appeal to build, equip and run our new Children and Families’ Centre. The new centre will open in January 2016 and at its heart will be our nursery for two to four year-olds with a learning disability, autism or developmental delay. This is currently located in Segal House, an ageing Victorian building on Annadale Avenue, which isn’t too far from here. As Ulster Rugby’s charity partner and with the support of the wider rugby community, we urgently need your help to raise the £1.7 million to make this dream a reality for the children and their families. You can help us tonight by texting a donation or by giving to one of our Mencap collectors around the stadium. SPECIAL NEEDS RUGBY UPDATE by TIM CRAIG , DISABILITY AND INCLUSION OFFICER

The Errigal Eagles and Portadown Panthers... One Year On

Good evening and welcome to Kingspan Stadium. I think it’s very appropriate as we support Mencap’s Big Step Forward Appeal today to have a look at how two of our special educational needs sections have progressed during their first season and tell you a little bit about the Wooden Spoon International Tag Festival that took place at Kingspan Stadium in June. It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the Errigal Eagles and the Portadown Panthers officially launched. Recently we spoke with representatives from the Eagles and the Panthers to see how their respective clubs have developed in the past year. Both the Eagles and the Panthers are now firmly established as part of the rugby community and this is largely due to funding from the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure’s (DCAL) ‘Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport Programme’. This funding has enabled our community rugby coaches to deliver training sessions at special educational needs schools and groups. My role is then to sign-post those pupils/players who wish to play the game towards their local rugby clubs. A similar approach in Coleraine and Ballyclare has led to the formation of the Coleraine Chargers and the Clare Hares. Other initiatives that have helped with the development of the game have been the delivery of two successful summer camps at Newforge and Coleraine RFC and the involvement of the eight disability rugby sections across Ulster in a series of monthly blitzes which has added structure to their season. It is also important to acknowledge the contribution that the IRFU Ulster Branch Special Needs Tag Rugby Group (STAG) have made to the development of the game in Ulster. Both the Eagles and the Panthers talked about their participation in the Wooden Spoon International Tag Festival. It was without doubt a resounding success despite the weather (it rained all day!) however this did not dampen the spirits of the players. This was the 8th year of the festival and it was the biggest to date as for the first time all four home unions were represented with a total of 44 teams participating involving 437 players. Following the last match presentations were made to the most sporting team from each of the sections

(Stage 1 and Stage 2 - Under 15/Over 15). The Mayor of the City of Belfast Miss Nicola Mallon; IRFU (Ulster Branch) Vice President (now President) Mr John Kinnear; the President of Wooden Spoon Mr Willie John McBride and Mr Des Kavanagh from the IRFU made the presentations to: Ballymena Bears; Stockport All-stars; The Clan (Doon Academy) and Garryowen Lions and medals were awarded to every player who participated. Following the speeches the day closed with the provision of dinner and a disco in the ‘Clubhouse Bar’ at Kingspan Stadium. There were smiles, smiles and more smiles on the faces of the players, their parents/carers, coaches and spectators throughout the day, it was a truly memorable experience. Kay Weeks from Stockport All-stars summed the day up with an email entitled ‘Superb tournament’: “Thank you so much for giving us all such a fantastic weekend at Kingspan Stadium. The whole Stockport squad and their parents were bowled over by the experience. Everything was brilliantly organised… All we had to do was to sit back; relax and enjoy it. The youngsters and their parents will be treasuring the experience for many years. This is the rugby community at its finest.” The work that went on behind the scenes by the volunteers; the referee’s; caterers; Ulster Rugby staff; parents; coaches and so many others who supported the event made the day the success that it was. It is safe to say that everybody involved with the day enjoyed the experience. It was all about the players to see their passion and enjoyment of the sport and to witness the skills and sportsmanship on display. It was just great to be a part of it. However the day would not have taken place without the support of Wooden Spoon; Belfast City Council and the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure. On behalf of IRFU Ulster Branch; STAG and all of the players and coaches I would like to acknowledge and thank them for their support. I am confident that with the continued support of DCAL, opportunities for people with disabilities to play rugby will continue to grow. The Eagles launched on 6th October 2013 when the Ballymena Bears travelled to Stranorlar the home of Finn Valley RFC for a session to allow new players to come and try tag rugby. Although starting from a small player base, the weekly Eagles training sessions which are now taking place at Letterkenny RFC have slowly attracted more players. The high point of the season for the Eagles was their participation in the Wooden Spoon International Tag Festival in June. Colin Farrell from the Eagles commented: “Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the festival together with the experience of playing at Kingspan Stadium and meeting the other clubs and players from the four home unions. Our first season had its challenges but it has also brought many rewards. It has been great to see the players developing their skills and most importantly enjoying the sport. The 2014 season got off to a flying start with seven players at the first training session at the end of September and it is expected that the numbers will continue to grow. We plan to take part in our first special needs tag rugby blitz in November and we will also host our own blitz at Letterkenny RFC on Sunday 19th April next year. We look forward to an exciting 2014/15 season.”

The Panthers were officially launched on 22nd September 2013 at Chambers Park with players and coaches from Portadown Panthers & Newforge Taggers in attendance. As Willie Gribben the Panthers Chairman explains: “It has been a busy and exciting year for the Panthers. In November 2013 the Panthers participated in the Ballymena Bears tag rugby blitz at Eaton Park with numbers having increased from a regular six attending to 10 players. In March 2014 they travelled to a blitz that was hosted by the Newforge Taggers at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. The Panthers entered two teams as their numbers had increased with a total of 17 players taking part. “The Panthers then hosted a blitz in April for five local clubs providing a programme of games for Under 15s & Over 15s. In May, the Panthers Over 15s played against Coleraine Chargers at the home of Ulster Rugby during half time of the official opening of the new stadium. The Panthers season finished in June when the two teams participated in The Wooden Spoon International Tag Rugby Festival at Kingspan Stadium.” Willie Gribben from the Panthers added: “It’s been a truly remarkable year for the Panthers. We have seen our player numbers grow to 20 and we also have 16 volunteer coaches involved with the Panthers. Everybody involved - players; parents; carers and coaches have thoroughly enjoyed our first season and we look forward to an equally successful season in 2014/15.”

INTO BATTLE WITH THE WARRIORS This evening, with autumn visibly and chillingly here, we will see Kingspan Stadium thunderingly brought to life. Article by Rod Nawn Freelance Journalist and Sports Enthusiast @RODNAWN1

previously struggled as the game in Scotland continued to create muddle and confusion on and off the pitch. Almost instantly the Warriors confirmed their intent with a PRO12 final appearance, a feat repeated last year, and a scan of the squad today proves the quality Townsend showed as a player is being mirrored in those he now guides. Stuart Hogg – who might have been in a white jersey this evening had rumoured negotiations last year taken a particular turn – is a full-back coveted throughout Europe, while Tommy Seymour’s rise to international status after he left Belfast three years ago is a consequence of having the confidence of his coach and his team-mates. The much-travelled Euan Murray, another Lion, is still a prop forward of the top rank, while out-half Duncan Weir, locks Jonny Gray and captain Ali Kellock are Scottish internationals upon whom the fans are investing faith for the future. Sean Lamont is a force of nature in midfield and is his country’s second most-decorated player of all time. Townsend has bolstered his squad from around the world, to maintain a genuinely Scottish core but unafraid to include the best talent from around the world. Canadian Daniel Tailliferre Hauman van der Merwe was already at Scotstown when the new coach took the reins, but he has flourished further and is now the club’s all-time record try-scorer. With Seymour – who scored twice in the six-try win last week in Treviso – he provides a threat from the flanks, but what Ulster supporter would swap the prolific Andrew Trimble or Tommy Bowe? It promises to be a wonderful match-up. Ulster got back on track with an intelligent if hardly spectacular defeat of Edinburgh last weekend, that Scottish team arriving at Kingspan with a clear plan to strangle home enterprise at birth. For 30 minutes it made for sorry viewing, but a bonus point win was secured by playing to strengths and there was something to smile about in the displays of centre Stuart McCloskey and Hughes Insurance Academy lock, Alan O’Connor. So third-placed Ulster meet the table-toppers this evening, at the end of the first phase of Guinness PRO12 fixtures. Les Kiss, Neil Doak, Jonny Bell and Allen Clarke will want the team to signal its readiness to find an extra gear. Their first and only priority today is a win over the Warriors, and a performance of cohesion, power, pace and concentration. Europe can wait, first let Gregor Townsend experience a rare downside to his tenure with the Warriors. These are two sides bristling with experience and proven talent, it should be a thriller.

The weekend’s biggest game is a top-of-the-table clash between an ambitious, trophy-hungry Ulster and the brightest jewel in Scotland’s rather fading rugby crown. Glasgow Warriors is a club that is bucking the rather unfortunate trend at home, in a few short years becoming PRO12 and European contenders while Edinburgh struggles, the club structures are in transition, and the international side seemingly in sharp decline. The building process at the Warriors’ tight, often intimidating Scotstoun base, has been purposeful and single-minded, and for the success which has come Glasgow’s way the credit in huge part must go to a Head Coach of real enterprise, imagination and extraordinary experience. Gregor Townsend would have been a go-to name in any era as a player, and his 82 international ‘caps’ evidence of a talent which saw him fill key roles in the Scottish backline for a decade. At out-half, as a free-running creative centre, or as a full-back with a solid defence but an instinct for attack Townsend was a star, respected by his peers across the world. His career in the professional game reads like a trip around the rugby planet, starting in the mid-nineties with the rugby ‘academy’ in Northampton, then there was a successful spell in the no-nonsense French game, first with Brive, then with Castres, before signing for Natal Sharks and Montpellier, short stints back home with the now-defunct Borders in its different guises sandwiched in between his stays in the two hemispheres. His leggy athleticism, his shrewd rugby brain, elevated Townsend into a pantheon of truly great players, and as a Lion his CV just gathered more and more accolades until his retirement and instant recruitment into the Scottish coaching set-up with primary responsibility for the backline. His reputation survived a tumultuous period at Murrayfield and players like the Lamont brothers, Chris Cusiter and Chris Paterson hugely benefitted from his tutelage. Just over two years ago, though, the Scottish Rugby Union decided that he could best be employed in developing the Glasgow side into a real force, the country’s flailing efforts at breathing life into regional clubs apparently only diluting an already depleted pool of talent. With a decisiveness which surprised some brought up on his expansive, often intelligently high-risk playing career, Townsend assessed his playing and coaching resources in the second city, strengthened in all those areas, his own reputation attracting ‘names’ who’d

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION

The Warriors have won their opening five games of the season, defeating tough opposition along the way to top the GUINNESS PRO12 table.

The day will live long in the memory of youngster, Zander Fagerson who made his debut. Two tries from winger Tommy Seymour were the highlight as Glasgow Warriors returned to the summit of the table. Seymour’s double and Tyrone Holmes’ score were the perfect response to Michele Campagnaro’s early try for the home side but Glasgow only led 19-16 at half-time. James Eddie, DTH van der Merwe and Sean Lamont all crossed for the visitors, although Campagnaro also went over for the second time. After the match, head coach, Gregor Townsend said: “The result was really good. To come to Treviso in front of a big crowd against a team who played really well and get a bonus-point win is a great achievement. The players worked hard for the win. “Our performance wasn’t up to the required standard at times during the game and our accuracy in attack and our discipline in defence needs to be better but all credit to the players for taking their opportunities and finishing them well.”

The opening game of the season was a replay of last season’s PRO12 Final, against Leinster with Glasgow triumphing 22-20 through a last minute Stuart Hogg penalty. That victory gave Townsend’s men belief and they carried on that momentum with two victories in South Wales over both Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons. The 33-13 victory in Newport was a hard fought one, which demonstrated the side’s steely determination. After Tyrone Holmes was sent off early on in the second half, the 14 men rallied together, scoring three tries through Josh Strauss, Tommy Seymour and Tim Swinson, adding benchmark for the Warriors and they made it four wins in a row, against Connacht on a Friday night at Scotstoun. Stuart Hogg made his first start of the season on home turf and scored two tries, with Henry Pyrgos, DTH van der Merwe and Mark Bennett also dotting down. Last week, the Warriors made it three consecutive bonus point victories through a 40-23 win against a feisty Treviso side to Alex Dunbar’s earlier try. The bonus point win set a
