GOURDS Gourds are a relatively carefree, warm weather crop. Gourds like lots of space, but will climb a trellis if garden space is tight. Plant 2-4 gourd seeds in the center of a large area, space 5’ apart in rows 8’ wide, after danger of frost has passed. In shorter season areas, they may be started inside. However, they grow best if direct seeded. Thin to 2 plants after the first few true leaves develop. Keep evenly moist as plants begin to grow, but water less as they grow unless the season is hot and dry. Harvest when tendrils and vines have dried out. Seeds should rattle when fully dried out. Bottle or Birdhouse 830GS 120 Days | Requires a long growing season. Fruit average from 8” to 14” tall. They have a bowl at the bottom, then a neck with that is wider at the top. To form a gourd that will sit upright on its base set them upright while they are still growing. Gourds need to cure after growing. Once dry, you can make birdhouses, canteens and other crafts.
