It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (247 South Road), left at the Council office (on 247 South Road) or emailed (cheabeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Absentee Ballots for November 8 th - Please contact the town office if you want an absentee ballot. The time to register or change your voter registration is now closed. You can make any changes the day of election. November 8 th Election- Election will take place at the Chebeague Island Community Center from 8AM-8PM for in person voting.

T axes Due September 30 th - The bills went out in August and the first payment was due September 30th. Interest began to accrue October 1, 2022. Please call the Town Office if you have questions and need to pay your taxes.

News from Chebeague Housing

Maine State Housing has made available funds specifically for island communities, recognizingtheuniqueneedsof islanders. The community survey, which over 125 people completed over the spring and summer, rated rental units as the highest priority for developing housing on the island. This directionwill be the first focus for Chebeague Housing. Chebeague Housing is working with Maine State Housing and the Genesis Fund for options

and resources to build rental units on the island. Thank you to the Island Institute for providing valuable guidance and best practices for Chebeague and other island communities. Stay tuned for the release of a website for Chebeague Housing, which will provide more information and ways to get involved. We started a raffle last year for an original copy (#98 of 250) of the book The Stone Sloops of Chebeague and the Men who Sailed Them. Tickets were sold at the Museum. We held the drawing for a winner during the Harvest Open House on Sun day, October 16th. Ehrhardt Groothoff randomly drew the win ning entry. The winner was Abby Julian. Congratulations, Abby!

ELLSWORTH MILLER MEMORIAL LECTURE SERIES Many thanks to Bill Danielson for his lecture on October 10th—“Chebeague Weather: Past, Present, and Future.” Bill explained how the weather and the island have changed over the centuries. Our next lecture will be via ZOOM only and will feature Dwayne Tomah, a teacher of the Passamaquoddy language and culture. Dwayne’s lecture will be "The Doctrine of Discovery" - a story of historical truth, spirituality, and resistance, told on behalf of the original nations and peoples. Dwayne is the youngest fluent speaker of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and has served on the Tribal Council. He is currently working with the Library of Congress on translating the Passa maquoddy Wax Cylinders. These recordings are the first recordings in the world of Native languages. They were record ed in 1890 by Jesse Walter Fewkes, who borrowed the device from the inventor Thomas Edison. You can join us on November 14th at 7 PM by going to zoom.us and selecting Join a Meeting. As life on the island quiets down, the Council is busy offering popular programs to the community. We held a well-attended COVID and flu vaccine clinic in October, administering shots to over 120 islanders. The Wellness Center continues to host Dr. Larson on the first and third Fridays of the month, as well as Dr. St. John of Mend Health and Wellness to provide chiropractic services. The podiatrist, Dr. Rybka will be here November 2. Please consult the calendar and call the practitioners to schedule an appointment. We are also working to have a nursing presence back on the island. You may have noticed that the mountain of Clynk bags is gone from the Chedemption shed. Annie Thaxter and the Bagettes have worked hard to ship the bags off the island and out of our waste stream. Wednesday SOUP is starting up on November 16 and 30. If we have enough volunteers to cook and

serve, we can serve soup weekly throughout the winter. Please let us know if you can join us.
