The unit outputs 2.5V a.c. / 1.5V d.c. at up to 16A a.c. or d.c. current. Output is via 4mm sockets, which accept standard 4mm plugs, shrouded plugs or spring loaded shrouded plugs. The unit is totally short circuit proof – the transformer is specially designed to withstand prolonged short circuits - and is constructed of powder coated Zintec steel. Mains power input is via an integral IEC connector, with mains fuse, an on/ off switch and inclusive lead. 4 of these units will fit into a Gratnells tray. An acrylic tube supports an easily moved coil so that a small cylindrical magnet (supplied) can be dropped down the tube to generate a pulse of electricity as it passes through. An oscilloscope is used to monitor the pulse and measure its amplitude. At different speeds the amplitude varies and can be used by senior students to investigate Faraday’s Law while revising equations of motion to determine the speed. PC based oscilloscopes are particularly suited to this equipment and full instructions are included. Twin coils, 150 and 300 turns, allows for extra versatility. KS4/Post-16. When the FIRE button is pressed the energy stored is released as a pulse into a low resistance coil to fire a small steel projectile. The lower arm of the coil is 75mm long (minimum) and 20mm wide. In use the coil is supported between the poles of 2 ferrite slab magnets on a yoke or in the adjustable magnet on the top pan of an electronic balance. When a current is passed through the coil the force can be easily measured by the change in reading on the balance and investigations into F=BIL can be carried out.
