THE largest infrastructure project in western Europe, London’s Crossrail, is a 118km high-speed rail link across London. Five tunnel-boring machines are working 24 hours a day to produce 21km of twin-bore tunnels beneath the city. The tunnels are strengthened with ArcelorMittal steel fibres. Over 11,000 tonnes of bespoke steel fibres are being supplied from the ArcelorMittal wire plants in Sheffield, England, and Bissen, Luxembourg. Crossrail’s eastern tunnels, from the Limmo Peninsula to Farringdon, and from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green, will use 4,000 tonnes of ArcelorMittal HE++90/60 steel fibres to reinforce the segments, and over 1,000 tonnes of HE+55/35 fibres in sprayed concrete will be supplied to contractor Dragados Sisk. In the 2.6km tunnel from Plumstead to North Woolwich, around 1,000 tonnes of HE++90/60 steel fibres in segments Two new grades of high performance, high tensile strength steel fibre were developed specifically for Crossrail. World’s largest battery to relieve grid

Beijing’s tunnel power

Hokkaido, in the northern part of Japan, is the largest prefecture, and second largest island. Cheap, abundant land has made the area an attractive destination for renewable energy projects which, since July 2012 and the introduction of the feed-in tariff scheme, have experienced significant growth. According to figures released by Japan’s ministry of economy, trade and industry (METI), a total of 1,394MW of renewable energy capacity was added between April 2012 and January 2013, and this expansion has put the power grid under enormous pressure. To relieve this, Japan is set to build what is believed to be the

The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has awarded a contract to Nexans for the supply of a high-voltage power cable system to support the future development and extension of the power transmission infrastructure in Beijing. The new power link in the Haidian district, known as the Pilot Project, will be Beijing’s first intra-city installation of 500kV cables using XLPE insulation. Nexans will design, manufacture and install a 7km circuit to be laid in an underground tunnel, and will supply all related high-voltage power accessories. The single-core XLPE cable will feature Nexans’ largest copper cross-section to date at 2,500mm 2 . A total of 21km of cable will be laid as three separate 7km lengths, and is due for completion at the end of 2014. Nexans recently acquired power cable business Shandong Yanggu Cables Group, which will strengthen the group’s position in China.

Wuxi Suntech will apply to the court to continue operations under the supervision of the administrators. Wuxi Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd – China Website : www.suntech-power.com China’s boost for local prices Bloomberg reports that China’s state reserves manager signed agreements with six smelters to buy 300,000 metric tons of aluminium, at $2,434 per ton, in an effort to support local prices. Data provider SMM Information & Technology Co said on its website that the State Bureau of material reserve will pay around four per cent more than the spot price for the metal to be delivered during April and May. “The stockpiling plan could help tighten the market in April and May,” Huang Fulong, an analyst at Citic Securities Futures Co, said by telephone from Shenzhen. “The agreed price was slightly lower than [the] market expected.” SMM believes the sellers include Aluminium Corp of China Ltd (Chalco), China Power Investment Corp, Yunnan Aluminium Co and Henan Shenhuo Coal & Power Co. The reserves manager last bought 100,000 tons in November.

Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd has announced that a group of eight Chinese banks has filed a petition for insolvency and restructuring of its Chinese subsidiary, Wuxi Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd, in the Wuxi Municipal Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangsu Province. Wuxi Suntech notified the court that it will not file an objection and the company expects the court’s decision shortly. Wuxi Suntech is Suntech Power Holdings’ principal operating subsidiary in China, engaged in the manufacture of photovoltaic cells and modules. The company has additional cell and module production facilities at wholly owned or partially owned subsidiaries in Wuxi, Shanghai and Luoyang and, in the event the court approves insolvency and restructuring of Wuxi Suntech, it will continue production of solar products to meet existing customer orders. “While we evaluate restructuring initiatives and strategic alternatives, we are committed to continuing to provide high quality solar products to our global customer base,” said David King, Suntech’s CEO. “During this period, we will continue to work closely with all of our stakeholders and take the necessary steps to put Suntech back on track for growth.” The insolvency and restructuring procedure is designed to facilitate an orderly restructuring plan for both Wuxi Suntech and its creditors. Shenzhen Woer Heat-Shrinkable Material Co Ltd is to buy the Asian consumer electronics assets of American cable maker Belden Inc. The acquisition of Belden’s Hong Kong-based LTK International subsidiary will give Shenzhen Woer substantial additional manufacturing capacity in China. It is also designed, company officials said, to expand its presence in the electronics industry and speed development of environmentally orientated cross-linked materials. Woer products include cross-linked polyethylene wires, heat shrinkable tubing and materials, poly-tetrafluoroeth- ylene tubing and EPDM elastomer tubing. “Through this acquisition, Woer aims not only to develop its electronics business but also give LTK the ability to share and capitalise on the resources of both Woer and LTK,” LTK said in a January letter to customers. “This strategic alliance will allow both parties to stay ahead of their competitors and offer new attention-getting and leading products in electronic cable as well as environmentally friendly cross-linked materials.” Belden bought LTK in 2007 for $195 million. At the time, Belden said LTK had 2006 annual sales of about $220 million. Belden says the Woer deal involves only a part of the original LTK purchase in 2007. LTK has four manufacturing plants in China and makes products such as PVC and TPE jacketed cables for data, transmission and automotive applications. Minister of telecommunication and information technology, Amirzai Sangin, said the optic fibre line is being built at a total cost of $6.1million, with financial support from the World Bank. The network will deliver greater connectivity to Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries and the world, Amirzai Sangin added, describing Afghanistan as a pioneer in telecommunications in the region. Kunduz officials are welcoming the potential for standard telecommunication services in the province. “Kunduz is a boundary province, which shares a border with Tajikistan. We should try to have as developed a country as our neighbours,” said Kunduz governor Mohammad Anwar Jigdalak. Afghanistan’s fibre optic network could ultimately cost in the region of $60 million, and will earn the government $5 million per month when complete.

Strong appeal for wire Southeast Asia

Securing a back-up route Recently there have been a number of major outages of submarine cables, severely disrupting Internet connectivity between the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe. EASSy and SEACOM outages temporarily wiped out Internet connectivity in parts of East Africa, from Djibouti to South Africa. Sea-We-Me-4, the primary Internet backbone between southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Europe, failed at the end of March, leading to a widespread disruption of Internet services from Egypt to Pakistan. Since October 2012, the UAE-IX Internet exchange in Dubai has been operating as an Internet hub between Europe, Africa and Asia. “Higher connectivity can reduce the impact of submarine cable cuts for ISPs and their customers,” said Harald Summa, CEO of DE-CIX Management GmbH, which manages UAE-IX.

wire Southeast ASIA returns to the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) from 17 th to 19 th September in Bangkok, Thailand. The trade fair provides an attractive focal point and springboard for local businesses and international companies seeking to broaden their export of wire, cable, and technologies. Organised by Messe Düsseldorf Asia, more than 400 companies will be exhibiting their latest innovations during the three-day event. As ASEAN prepares for further development with a major line-up of infrastructural projects in the pipeline, the wire industry remains strong through robust support from the region and around the world. Seven national pavilions and country groups from Austria, China, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan and the USA have secured participation in the event ahead of its staging in September. Recognised as the industry’s much-awaited trade fair for the region, wire Southeast ASIA 2013 will outperform its successful edition in 2011 with higher profile exhibitors from big international companies, approximately 15 per cent of who are first-time exhibitors. The mushrooming of infrastructure projects in Southeast Asia signals further expansion in the construction industry and sustained demand for related products and new technologies. For example, The Thai government is embarking on a US$67 billion infrastructure development to provide a new transport backbone. In the Philippines, the government has launched an estimated 30 major public works projects that range from road, rail, airport and water projects. Expansion and construction of underground rail systems and land highways will continue to be a regular feature on Singapore’s evolving infra- structural horizon while similar plans have been mapped for Indonesia as the country braces

Cost reduction in sector cable production

Cable manufacturers are increasingly venturing into global markets in the search for opportunities to sell more and make better use of their production capacities. At the same time, the competitive pressure among manufacturers is fierce. Success or failure in the marketplace is increasingly being dictated by quality and price. As such, the goals are clearly defined: • Establish stable production proc- esses • Assure the highest quality level • Save raw material In order to meet these challenges, quality monitoring systems need to be installed at critical points in the production line. Ensuring the dimensional stability of heights and widths (ie average wall thickness in terms of height and width) is of the utmost importance. State-of-the-art measurement sys- tems, integrated into the production process, perform this monitoring task and the statistical evaluation of the measured data. This data indicates how steady the production line is, and where processes could potentially be optimised. Problems such as irregular melts, inconsistent production speeds or conductor faults do not go undetected, and can be remedied immediately. For example, unacceptable scrap caused by irregularly melted granular material can be detected and sorted during the manufacturing process. How can the price to performance ratio be optimised? By saving even more material. One thing is clear: Based on just a few available data measurements, production must be tailored to a maximum certainty, and the insulation manufactured with thicker walls than is really necessary. However, if a perfect insulation layer can be guaranteed and the wall thickness rigorously tested right after the extruder, this can lead to the manufacturing of the wall thickness at

the lower end of the specified tolerance range, and can save between two and five per cent of the total material cost every year. DVO 2 systems from Zumbach, combined with a USYS data acquisition, processing and display system embedded with Jacketmaster software, can capture and process all critical parameters, such as height, width, minimum and maximum dimensions easily, regardless of cable shape or profile, and at all angle variations. Each ODAC ® measuring head mounted on the oscillating device DVO 2, oscillates continuously around the product within an angle of ±50° and at cyclical speeds of between 2.6 and 45 seconds. Thanks to the oscillation of the measuring head, it is not necessary to keep the sector cable in a fixed position. This unique advantage means that any and all types of sector cable (straight and pre-spiralled) can be measured reliably and accurately in any position. The DVO 2 units are installed before and after the extruder to calculate the wall thickness of an extruded, resp coated sector cable. Matt TPU for wire and cable Huntsman Polyurethanes has developed a non-blooming, matt, polyester-based solution for the wire and cable market. Irogran ® A 85 C 5024 DP is a new material to eliminate the risk of blooming (when additives migrate to the surface of a material and become visible). Blooming has no effect on the mechanical performance of cable, but it is unsightly and is an issue that cable manufacturers have looked to resolve. Irogran A 85 C 5024 DP is a halogen-free TPU that offers a consistent matt finish and stable extrusion qualities. Easy to process, the product is thought well suited to wire and cable applications such as jacketing, spiral and data cables. A number of customers have already trialled the product, which has passed third party RoHS and halogen-free tests. The compound is targeted for use in China, but the company anticipates interest from elsewhere. Henry Yao, market development manager for greater China at Huntsman Polyurethanes, said: “Irogran A 85 C 5024 DP is an important addition to our wire and cable portfolio. There are other matt technologies available on the market, but this is unique in terms of the formulation

and its non-blooming properties.” Huntsman Polyurethanes – USA Website : www.huntsman.com New single fusion splicer Fujikura Europe has launched the 70S fusion splicer, replacing its

Meeting the demand for streaming

“This collaboration brings together world leading groups in optical fibre research and optics and represents a rare opportunity to bring together key technologies that could herald a step change in the industry.” Aside from components for communications, the development of multi-cored fibre laser array devices may have other applications including multi-functional fibre probes for endoscopy, laser surgery, machining and defence. The project has been granted £70,000 as part of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) to cover staff and student exchanges, as close interaction between Heriot-Watt and the CGCRI is needed in the fibre design stage and device development stages of the project. considered to promise a solution to the problem. The active fibre components that the Scottish-Indian team are developing will enable future networks to be built. The team is drawn from Heriot-Watt University’s School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, led by Dr Henry Bookey, and the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) in Kolkata, led by Dr Mukul Chandra Paul. The Indian team brings expertise in the fabrication of novel optical fibre structures while the Scottish team will design, test and build the devices enabled by the new fibres. Dr Bookey said: “With the prevalence of video streaming and the emergence of cloud computing, we’re reaching the capacity of standard, single core fibres. “Spatial division multiplexing in the form of multi-core optical fibre (MCF) is considered by many to be the next platform for optical communications.

Researchers from Scotland and India are working together to develop a game-changing platform for optical communications to meet the ever-increasing demand for faster data streaming. They will be developing amplifiers and lasers, which could increase exponentially the amount of data that can be carried by glass fibres no thicker than a human hair. The demand for bandwidth in optical communications continues to grow with the rapid growth in online visual communications, online gaming, video streaming and so on. The wiring of international data centres is already a massive challenge, as current technologies which use single core fibres reach their limit. Researchers believe that, without further advances in the science, bottlenecks will form at long haul communications nodes. Now ‘multi-core’ fibre (MCF) is widely

Intelligent communication interfaces

Profibus DP and Profinet IO industrial fieldbus standards have been used successfully for communication between devices of different manufacturers in automated production lines. With a new update to its Profibus DP interface, Zumbach is raising the usability of its devices to a new level. In addition, Profinet IO Industrial Ethernet is now available for the entire Zumbach family of devices. In industrial production, numerous automation, engineering and visualisation systems are connected to a bus. The Profibus interface enables centralised control of all devices involved in the production process as well as many standard diagnostic functions – and all this via a secure and fast connection (up to 12 Mbps). The cyclic collection and preparation and reliable evaluation of the measuring data via the interface has a significant effect on the quality of the monitoring. Zumbach’s communication via Profibus DP not only significantly improves the workflow between individual production units, but also requires little hardware (one engineering tool for all devices), reducing investment and service costs. Thanks to the bus topology, sensors can be coupled and uncoupled during operation.

❍ ❍ A selection of gauges with Profibus/Profinet interface

Practically every Zumbach device is available for use in Profibus DP structures – directly or via a Profibus interface. Through the use of an intelligent protocol, the complete functionality of each sensor is fully supported from the initialisation step all the way to the actual data exchange. Specifically, the Profibus firmware has been adapted and the GSD file has been significantly improved. Now it provides for an easier, faster and more cost-effective installation: • Easy drag-and-drop installation: install device-specific language version of the GSD file (DE, FR, EN), then drag the Zumbach device to the user interface of the customer. • Actual value acquisition: operational readiness with two inputs thanks to device-specific parameters, very easy to add measured quantities/modules Profinet IO – the successor to Profibus DP – is designed for data exchange between Ethernet-based field devices. The open industrial Ethernet standard meets the increasing demands of automation reliably and sustainably with optimum flexibility, efficiency and performance. Zumbach has developed a new GSDML file for Profinet which makes the implementation of Profibus and Profinet easy and practically identical. New PlasmaAnnealer for fine stainless steel and nickel alloy wire

❍ ❍ The new annealer from Plasmait

The PlasmaAnnealer can cold start production in a few minutes and can be stopped quickly. This avoids the lengthy heating-up and cooling-down times and associated energy costs that are symptomatic for a conventional furnace. Ion sputtering on the material surface results in fine dry surface cleaning and surface oxide removal, which have proved beneficial to applications with demanding surface requirements. High-speed trials on the new line can be performed at Plasmait’s facility in Austria. The annealer can process different types of materials used in applications such as fine wire for mesh and textile, filter wire, EMS mesh wire, electronics resistance wires, heating element wires, copper clad steel and copper clad aluminium wires, as well as wires, ropes and tubes for medical, jewellery, aerospace and similar applications.

Plasmait has introduced a new PlasmaAnnealer for fine and small diameter stainless steel and nickel alloy wire. The annealer can be used for small cross-section round, flat and shaped wire as well as for fine ropes and tubes made of stainless steel and nickel alloys. This new concept allows for a radical increase of continuous annealing speeds that can surpass 15m/s in the case of fine wire sizes of austenitic stainless steels. With such speeds annealing can be performed in-line with drawing or rolling, substituting multiple lines of a traditional tube furnace. The annealer features compact design, high energy conversion efficiency and very low gas consumption, and gives the operator the ability to target mechanical properties with a great degree of accuracy. Rapid heating and reduced time of recrystallisation results in fine grain size with uniform crystal structure.
