18 TheWestCoastConference 2001 was another outstanding year for women 's soccer in the West Coast Con– ference as Sa nta Clara University cap– tu red the leag ue's fi rst NCAA Championship. Fellow conference membe rs San Dieg o, Po rtland and Pepperd ine all appeared in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Santa Clara 's NCAA run marked the sixth consecutive yea r they have reached the Final Fou r. made their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament this past year. USO was defeated by Washington 2- 0 in the opening rou nd . The University of Portland was one victory away making the 2001 NCAA Finals an AII– WCC affair. The Pilots finished the 2001 season ranked third in the nation by the NSCAA after reaching the semi-finals for the sixth time . A total of four conference schools ended the season ranked in the NSCAA Top-25. This season, both the NSCAA and Soccer Magazine have four WCC teams ranked in the 2002 preseason polls .
Conference History The WCC is proud to enter its eleventh season of women's soccer. Historical ly, four member teams have tasted
post season play, with Santa Clara lead ing the way with 13 appearances, including eight NCAA semi-finals. Portland follows with nine trips, in– cluding six appearances in the NCAA Semi-Fi– nals. The Pilots advanced to the Finals in 1995.

Saint Mary's has qualified for the tournament three times, most recently advancing to the sec– ond round in 2001 . The University of San Diego has appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times , aiming for their fourth straight trip in 2002 .
Women's soccer is one of 13 sports the 50-year-old conference sponsors. Started in 1952 as a men 's basketball league for five Bay Area schools , the WCC added women 's athletics to its lineup in 1985. All WCC members are private institutions with high academic standards and growing athletic tradition .
