stay cool WITH Babe sta Beat!

O ptimism and excitement for what’s next and celebrating the cool & unique within all of us—these are things we try to bring you with each issue of the Babesta Beat. And what better way to express this enthusiasm than the exclamation point design motif this season by our friends at NUNUNU. We love it! Definitive, passionate and amplifying by nature—let’s make a pact that this is how we shall enjoy the fall! That level of excitement is seen throughout the children’s world. We see gear brands amping it up with gusto! Brands you love are doing more, making it safer, better and more stylish to stroll, ride in a car, eat, bathe and dress. With innovation comes imagination, and the teams of creative minds that came together to create our fashion stories brought the energy in spades. In Welcome to the Dollhouse , we introduce you to a group of ‘indelicate’ children in a delicate house filled with mirrors, crystal and porcelain. The theatrical yet dark beauty of the story, shot by Lisa Loftus, blended with the always creative sought-after clothing of Bobo Choses, makes for a magical experience. Class Portrait , shot by Elliston Lutz, gives a more personalized spin on the classic portrait, embracing the fun and spirit of the subjects, members of the selfie generation, clearly adept at projecting who they really are. Lastly, in Space Odyssey , shot also by Elliston Lutz, we integrated props like forward-looking Samsung Oculus and (nod to retro culture) giant space invader necklaces (found at Blue Tree), acknowledging the fact that the future is lit with the stars of the past quite literally. There’s so much to see this season and more is coming. Keep an eye on our site as we add more features to make shopping even more fun. And watch our calendar of events, we’re always trying to come up with great reasons to get together and celebrate the cool of being a city kid! JENN, AZ & THE BABESTA TEAM SHOP THE CATALOG

SAVOR IT Storage for milestones

P reserve the big . Celebrate the small. Savor it all. That’s the motto by modern mothers Jennifer Nevins & Karla the Losen, who created keepsake organization company Savor, teaching new parents (and the less organizationally savvy who need a method) to keep track of all those mementos. Specific tools are always a plus and Savor has divided their keepsake system into a baby box (ages 1-4) and school age box (ages 4+) with 50+ labels to guide you along. When choosing what to keep, we always think less is more. Children’s art work is more memorable when you save a few truly special pieces. How to choose? Let your kids decide what is special to them and then get creative with the extra.

F irst , start with the clean lines and beautifully executed furniture design of the Oeuf collection. Then, add the heart, soul and fun (e.g. Oeuf’s decor & accessories) as this is where the magic happens. The collection tells the tale of a quirky, fun, colorful world of rainbows, gold-toothed or braces-celebrating smiles, punch buggies and limousines, and oddities such as a gold-watched canine and a roguish fox. The needlepoint pillows, woven in wool and sourced from Peru make a great accent on a bed or chair, and the blankets, stuffies and rugs are just the accoutrements that will add the right dose of fun to a child’s room. Love is a sentiment that repeats throughout the collection and you can feel the love (and the resultant smile) that most defnitely crossed the face of each and every person from idea to execution, as they bring these perfectly silly, yet beautiful, goodies to life. RYLEE &CRU Fall in love with

W hat makes the children ’ s brand with a muted palette and delicate , hand - drawn illustrations such a fan favorite ? R ylee & C ru delivers nostalgic childrenswear with dreamy photography , capturing the imagination of nearly 70,000 I nstagram followers and countless other devotees . T he brand ’ s ascent to the top of the indie children ’ s market is much like their designs — no hocus pocus , just an authentic focus on creating charming , minimalistic yet artistic designs that connect with both parent and child . W e talked to founder K elli M urray to find out more about the coveted brand . on creating Rylee + Cru “Rylee + Cru was really a culmination of all of my past experiences. It was merging my love for fashion and design, my love for illustration, and my love for my kids. It just felt like this is what I was always meant to do. It’s a lot of trial and error. I probably spend the most time on artwork...creating it and then figuring out what belongs where. I CAD it all up on my computer and play around with a ton of different options before making any final design decisions. My “throw away” pile is usually a lot deeper than my “keep” pile...

24

babesta beat spring/summer 2016

My dad started a screen printing business out of our garage when I was a baby, which he then built into a successful business with over 50 employees. Because of that I was always exposed to the world of screen printing and design. This was part of the reason I decided to go to design school. Straight out of college I started working for him and was able to help build a brand from the ground up with a team of other designers there. A lot of the skills I learned working for him are what I am now using in developing Rylee &Cru.” on family life “I was born in Chicago but have always called San Diego home. I’ve lived here since I was 2. My family and I live in a small beach town in North County called Encinitas. We love it here and I can’t really imagine being anywhere else. My daughter Rylee is in pre-school and my son Cru is just 1. Rylee loves dresses and accessories! Anything that lets her “twirl.” Fortunately, she still doesn’t put up much of a fight about the things I pick out for her, so I will enjoy that for as long as she lets me. Even though we (my husband Sam Larson of Lone Flag and me) are in similar fields of work, our jobs don’t intersect much. So when he is in need of encouragement, I am able to be that. And when I am in a rut or need a fresh perspective, he is able to provide that. Both of us working for ourselves and doing separate entrepreneurial jobs definitely brings its challenges (especially while raising babies), but I think it also allows us to understand and support each other better. I want to see him reach his goals and he wants to see me passionate about what I am doing. It somehow just works. For us, time together has been our biggest sacrifice and something we are always trying to get more of. At the end of the day, we both know that our family is more important than any of our career pursuits, so we try to always keep that in the forefront of our minds while still working really hard to make things happen. The tough part about owning your own business, especially a creative one, is that the wheels never stop turning and there is always something more to do. I’ve had to really discipline myself with my time and create boundaries. I have to be intentional about the time I spend with my husband, my kids and my friends... otherwise my workaholic tendencies can easily take over.” on Instagram: “I had no idea what to expect—I really didn’t anticipate such a great response. I take some of the photos, but I also work with a talented photographer friend, Jackie Wonders, on most of our studio and lifestyle shoots. I am careful of how I curate my feed so that it best represents our brand, but it’s not what I think of when creating the collection. Since we’ve started, I’ve learned so much. Mainly that mamas are passionate about the clothes they put their babies in! Going into this, I didn’t know how much opportunity there was out there for children’s brands. Now, a year and a half later, I realize there is not only opportunity, but it’s an industry that is really exploding and I am so excited to be a part of it. The most rewarding part is happy customers. People who appreciate what we do and love the clothes we make. I’m also so thankful I get to wake up every day and do what I love for a living.”

I knew my illustrations would easily lend themselves to children’s wear. It really didn’t seem so daunting to try. I was more worried about if people would like it or not, but I always told myself, “What’s the worst that could happen!?” I have a blog where I share about my family, my style, and good design. [Womenswear designer] dRA and I connected through that and had worked on some social media collaborations together in the past. She knew I was not only a blogger but a designer as well, and she reached out to me about collaborating on some signature prints for her women’s line. It was a no-brainer for me. It’s been fun to see my prints on womenswear...on pieces I myself can actually wear! I hope that this is something I can be doing for a really long time. …there are a lot of product categories I hope to venture into including home, accessories, swimwear and womenswear. I feel like there is still so much room for growth.” on inspiration “Nature has always been one of my biggest inspirations—also books, memories, my own kids, and other creative friends I have in real life and online. I grew up visiting my grandparents’ cabin in Wisconsin for many winters. This [AW 16] collection was somewhat inspired by my own nostalgia of the time I spent there as a child. Thick forest was all around us, we often saw a herd of deer passing through and on occasion a grizzly bear. The night sky was as black as coal and the stars shined so bright it felt like you could reach out and touch them. It all felt so magical as a child, it only seemed fitting to work these fond memories into a collection.

The new Faena is hands-down the place to score a room right now but I still love the Edition, which has two pools so adults can chill by one and the other is more family oriented. The other new place a lot of families are liking is the 1 Hotel. It’s a little farther south

than I like to stay, and a little bigger than I generally like, but they have rooms with two king beds—unheard of!—that are a great fit for a family who doesn’t want to splurge on a suite or connecting room, plus all the linens are organic and there’s a Soul Cycle if you need to keep a fitness routine going. What sort of prep ahead of time should I do? Start by booking your flight and hotels. Rooms sell out well ahead of time, and prices are high, so if you know where you want to be and don’t want to pay a fortune for it, the sooner you book, the better. Then figure out what exhibits are on, which galleries have the shows that interest you and your crew, and where the parties are that you want to attend. Dinner reservations and a good babysitter are key to making evenings run smoothly (those both book up, too). Are there events that are kid-friendly or geared toward families at ABM? Anything outdoors, like films or performances in Collins or SoundScape Parks, are a good bet with kids. But even at the Convention Center, the Miami Children’s Museum sets up a playroom for kids ages

a conversation that, while uncomfortable, isn’t a bad one to have. But it’s okay to scoot quickly beyond something that you’re not ready for kids to see. Any other tips or “don’t miss” ideas for this year’s extravaganza? If you have young kids transitioning out of a stroller, bring it anyway. And snacks! The Convention Center is huge, and carrying a 30 lb 3-year-old through it won’t let you enjoy the show. hotels in Miami, so give us a buzz if you’re trying to get yourself in. We’ve stayed in almost every good hotel in town ourselves, too, so we can give you the ins and outs of the rooms, service and food. If the resort prices seem too crazed, we also have a local apartment rental person who can help find alternatives. We don’t have an in-house concierge, but we’ll get you hooked up with a place to stay (most of the hotels we work with also throw in free breakfast, spa credits and room upgrades for our clients, too), then tell you our favorite places to eat and what to see and do with your family. The concierge at the hotel is the right guy to score you the table, but we’ll point you in the right direction. Have you guys organized such a trip through Passported? What can we expect? We work really closely with all the best

What about nightlife? How do I elegantly shed the kids and enjoy a party? A lot of the parties happen in hotels, and a lot of the hotels have nightclubs that host events. If you’re nervous about straying too far while your children are with a sitter, plan to attend the parties that are just an elevator ride away. (And don’t worry about the noise—request a high floor and you won’t hear a thing). Trusting that you have a good sitter with the kids makes the whole thing easier. I’m lucky that I have in-laws in Miami that will take the kids, but my friends swear by The Babysitting Company . They’d be my first call if I didn’t have the grandparents on duty. What makes the modern art scene, in your estimation, a great choice for a family? The color, the interactivity, the elements of performance...these are things that capture everyone’s attention and imagination. While I can’t claim to understand much of what I see, I find it easier to cruise with the kids than “Old Masters.” There can be some NSFK moments—how do you handle or avoid them? I think for the most part, at a big art show, there are so many things to look at that if you come across something inappropriate, just keep moving. Young ones may not have even noticed what you saw. The themes likely to come up that will make you squirm are sex, poverty and violence, so if you have older kids, this could kickstart

WE GOT TO sit down with Jen Genel, pre and postpartum New York associate at Twin Love Concierge, a premium maternity service exclusively for parents of multiples, to get some great advice for two-sies. Although we have many clients with twins, Twin Love Concierge is our go-to resource when questions that take extra expertise come up! “When you’re having twins it can become overwhelming very quickly. Knowing what’s essential to buy and what doesn’t need to be purchased is key,” Genel says. A mother of twins herself, she started down this path out of necessity, on a quest to find the best information for herself. Genel knows that the ever-challenging lack of space in the city is of even greater importance when you’re talking twins: “Factor in the space in which you live, and your lifestyle. Those living in apartments have to really think about how much their space can hold.” We all know raising kids in the city is both rewarding and challenging, but if you master the basics (sleeping, eating and strolling), you’re well on your way to “call the round” with your perfect pair. TALKING TWINS WITH TWIN LOVE CONCIERGE

WHY WE LOVE IT: VERY NATURAL, MOST LIKE MOM!

Comotomo bottle 8oz. , 30291, $14.

Sleeping: “As long as twins are positioned a correct distance apart they can share a crib for up to 3 months of age. We use 3 months as our maximum cutoff as that is when some babies start to roll and it could potentially turn into a dangerous situation. We refer to the proper crib arrangement now as a naked crib—so mattress, waterproof mattress protector, crib sheet and no blankets, pillows, toys or any items that can potentially become a SIDS risk. And of course keep babies on their back!” Eating: “When your twins are first born, you’re typically feeding them every 3 hours. We teach our families how to put their twins on a feeding schedule. Without a schedule, you will be feeding your babies around the clock and never have a moment to catch your breath. We also educate our families on how to feed the babies together whether you are nursing or bottle feeding. As far as gliders go, we always recommend that you buy one with low arm rests, so you can easily accommodate a nursing pillow and of course your two little ones.” Strolling: “Side by side or tandem? Our city families are looking for terrific light, sturdy strollers with lots of storage space. Their stroller ultimately becomes an extension of their apartment. Getting around the city with twins can be tricky. It’s hard to get up and down those subway steps and in order to ride the bus, you must fold up your stroller. Walking is really the best way to move about. NYC is such an amazing city to walk around. Get on some cute, comfy kicks—put your twins in their stroller and head out the door.”

HEYMAMA B ehind the successful heymama business lies friends, partners and of course mamas. Katya Libin and Amri Kibbler have channeled their skills in marketing and fashion to provide a community for mothers who want to bond, draw inspiration and work together. Fast friends, the two ladies behind the entrepreneurial website, actually met through their daughters. A playdate in McCarren Park ignited the first conversation for heymama.co—the pair segued from discussing Amri’s potential food blog, to conceiving the current network that today has interviewed power mamas like Ivanka Trump and Ali Webb (Drybar), and brings together business-minded and creative mothers all across the world. Not only impacting their peers, the partners feel the effect of their buisiness at home. “I think having a parent in a startup has given [their children] a real sense of the way people work now, that you can build your business from the ground up,” explains Amri. We were lucky enough to chat with the mamas behind the mamas about their business, girl power and what’s next for heymama. You see things from both sides—your own journey and the entrepreneurial journeys of the women in your network. What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? Katya: Endless positivity and focus, a true fire within that doesn’t burn out. Amri: As an entrepreneur you have to be ready to roll with the punches as every day is different. This means that not only do you never get bored, but you also have to do it ALL yourself. It really helps to go into it with a great partner that you trust. What ties the women that you profile together—personal attributes or points of view? K: All of the women we interview have a crazy fire under their ass and passion which we admire. It doesn’t slow down when they have kids, it just gives them a greater purpose to do what they do and have it all, even for a few minutes a day. What we saw at The Great Jane, our retreat in Ojai this May, is that whether she was a speaker or an attendee, every mama had something she’d been through and could speak to. heymama’s events and platform just gives them an opportunity to do that.

One of our favorite pages on your site is the Discover page. What was your concept here? K: Having a way for mamas to find each other, connect on interests and collaborate. We found this was the best way for us to do that and we hope people use it to discover mamas in their city. We’ll be adding new functionality soon too, so stay tuned! What are the challenges you see that women in the work force still face today? K: Great question. Equal pay for equal work. That’s why starting your own company gives you so much more control. I guess I shouldn’t talk about politics, but what about the fact that we’ve nearly broken the ultimate glass ceiling? Any words on the election? A: It would be crazy to say that it’s not exciting to have a woman be so close in the election, and actually in grasp of the presidency. It would be a huge milestone for us. (However personally, I am not behind any of the candidates this election 100%.) We’ve met some pretty cool entrepreneurs through you guys— Hello Sitter and Natti Natti, to name a few! How do you learn about these amazing women and their businesses? K: Word of mouth! We have so many members introduce us to other mamas just getting their businesses going, and it feels so good to help someone along their path. A: Lots of Instagram and just talking to people. Mamas are great about supporting each other! We’ve been lucky enough to have

Playdate go-to McCarren Park, Brooklyn.

people believe in what we’re doing and they recommend other mamas they love to us and so on. This is how the network has organically developed and expanded. What defines a ‘cool mama’? K: Someone who knows herself but is always growing. She has a strong sense of style and identity and most importantly she’s someone with a great attitude. A: Someone who wants to share her experiences and help other people, while remaining excited and curious about life. What are you most looking forward to this fall? K: We have so many exciting events and projects in the works; a series of workshops and panels in NYC and other cities to help working mamas get the skills they need in business, and the next Great Jane retreat. Oh, did we mention NYFW? How do you see heymama evolving? K: Our goal is to build local communities in different cities to support mamas along their journeys. We’re excited to have launched in Denver this past summer with the help of our local ambassadors. We’re in the midst of planning the next Great Jane retreat this fall, and are focusing heavily on sharing incredible stories on heymama.co and in our newweekly newsletter. Any lasting thoughts? K: One email can change your life. Thanks to those who helped us and we hope we can do the same to further your dreams and businesses in some way, big or small. A: You have to believe in yourself. Waking in the morning and starting the day with positive thoughts can change the world. We wanted to build a network of empowering mamas and we did it!

W elcome to life with your new baby. You thought the clutter was under control but now every thing seems out of place. It might take a little creativity (and stacking) but your apartment can re turn to zen mode or at least look like it has, says Sharon Lowenheim, a.k.a. ‘Organizing Goddess.’ “It’s all about the edit,” she says. Be selective about what you keep for posterity and group similar things together so it’s easier to find what you need. Also, she notes, “use the city landscape as a guide and think skyscrapers—buy tall storage units that maximize space. Don’t worry about baby not being able to reach everything.” The certified organizer cites her long-term strategy’s under pinnings: “When baby starts to crawl, you’ll be glad that there are high places to keep certain things out of reach.” An extra perk. FOOTMUFF BUFF GEEKING OUT ON FOOTMUFFS What’s the big diff between footmuffs? Babesta breaks it down! C onfounded by what your winter strategy will be? With choices that range from lightweight and midweight, to extra warm puffer and sheepskin, it can feel a bit confusing. Just like ‘stroller sprawl’ you don’t want to fill your home with mountains of muffs. But, again, just like strollers, a couple well chosen warmers will take you the distance, until baby is strutting to school with a jean jacket, leather bomber or packable down, as the season requires.

These are if you are dressing your child in her winter warms and just need an extra layer. Blankets normally do, like the Bugaboo wool blanket and the Aden & Anais Dream blanket. For actual footmuffs, the Pooki Poncho Light is a good choice, as it’s a single layer stroller blanket that doubles as a cover for your front carri er. The light version of the cover does not include the heavier fleece in the regular Pookie Poncho. The topper gives just enough weight to keep baby comfy. LIGHTWEIGHT FOOTMUFFS

Pookie Poncho light , 30369, $98; Bugaboo soft wool blanket , 30366, $110.

MULTI-SEASON FOOTMUFFS

Seasons change, and so do needs in the footmuff department, so Skip Hop and 7AM smartly created some 3-in-1 solutions where you can manage the heat as needed.

Bugaboo Elements footmuff , 30236, $160; Bee igloo striped footmuff (small) 30324, $102.

MID-WEIGHT FOOTMUFFS

The stroller companies generally make a mean muff that perfectly matches the stroller—case in point Bugaboo and BabyZen’s signature footmuffs. Another great choice: 7AM’s Bee igloo model. These are perfect for the fall and early spring seasons, when it’s crisp but not chilly. They can extend through thewinter aswell, but don’t forget baby’s coat andhat!

Baby shield double footmuff, 15550, $138; Stroll + Go 3 season footmuff , 30325, $80.

Winters canbeharsh in thecityand for that blusteryperiod, we swear by the212blanket by7AMEnfant, theBugabooHighPerformance footmuff, and theElks&AngelsSnugpod. Puffer material keepsbaby toastyandahooddoes wonders for keeping theheat in. In fact, baby might just beplain-clothed in the footmuff as the warmer does the jobof awinter coat andhat! The puffer footmuffs are machine washable which adds convenience. Interestingly, the natural sheepskin footmuff (which does need a professional clean) is warming in the winter and cooling in the summer so it doesn’t have to retire after the season. Just zip off the front and use it as a moisture wicking stroller liner.

212 footmuff in heather grey , 24123, $210.

CARRIER & CAR SEAT FOOTMUFFS!

Carriers and car seats have their own crop of footmuffs. 7AM Enfant makes an awesome carrier cover that doubles as a single ply stroller blanket called the Pookie Poncho. Ergo & Baby Bjorn also make their own that can cover baby seamlessly. As for car seats, this is important! According to the Car Seat Lady, Alisa Baer, never have bulky coats or thick footmuffs on baby when riding in the car. She helped 7AM design the perfect muffs that are as safe as they are stylish. The NIDO and Easy Cover by 7AM Enfant are backless so there is no bulk added and the baby sits directly on the car seat.
