Choosing the Correct Diagnostic Tool

for in-depth analysis rather than a simple description. This can be found in the form of technical data, test plans or even a dedicated telephone support line for complete peace of mind. Reading and registering a fault code is just the start, many fault codes only offer a basic description which enables you to locate the area of the fault but not necessarily identify what the fault actually is. Choosing the correct Bosch Diagnostic Tool When purchasing a Bosch diagnostic tool, it is essential that you consider what part of the diagnostic package you’re investing in. The Bosch diagnostic range includes 3 different sections, which when combined create some of the most comprehensive diagnostic capabilities available on the market. Selected models in the Bosch range can combine 2 of these parts to offer increased efficiency.

DCU/LAPTOP

The DCU/Laptop is the hardware that is used to run the ESi software, which communicates with the Bosch KTS/VCI system. Bosch currently offer 2 types of DCU, the DCU100 which is a touchscreen tablet, while the DCU220 is a high specification touchscreen tablet/laptop – ideal for future-proofing your investment. Both DCU’s are designed to run Bosch ESi software speedily and efficiently, make sure you get a professional experience. The rugged

and strengthened design means the machine can handle even the harshest workshop environments. Alternatively you can use your own laptop to run ESi software, however it is important to bear in mind the specification of your laptop. The higher the spec, the quicker the Bosch ESi software will run. With the constant development of diagnostic software, it is important to have a laptop that will be able to cope with its demands.

VCI/KTS

The VCI/KTS connects via the car diagnostic port to the Laptop/DCU and is the communication interface between the car and the Laptop/DCU When selecting a KTS, it is important to look at what is included. For example, the KTS590 has

a built in 2 channel scope that can be used for component testing. Other machines such as the KTS350 incorporate both the VCI/KTS and the Laptop/DCU, providing the ultimate ‘Two in One’ machine.

ESI SOFTWARE

A Battery Support Unit (BSU) regulates and monitors the voltage from a mains supply to a safe level, removing potential risks and protecting the vehicles electronic systems; damaging such systems can be costly. In the past Battery Support was only necessary during extended programming but the influx of on-board electronics means the current demand for energy is greater than ever. The increased power demand on a modern vehicle battery means that relying solely on the vehicle’s battery to maintain a safe voltage whilst carrying out diagnostics work is no longer sensible.

Battery Support Units are rated at their current output, this is the measurement representing the max current they can deliver when required. A high quality BSU will provide the current as required, taking away any strain or potential harm to the battery. It is important to make sure you have more current then needed, sudden draws of current that are over the rating of BSU can still cause voltage drop, resulting in failed programming or diagnostics. The voltage levels of the machine are also paramount, some vehicle manufacturers specify certain voltage levels – so ensuring your BSU can meet these requirements is vital.
