Golden October Steam in the Harz Mountains & More

This special ‘Golden October’ tour is timed to be in the Harz for a Brocken steam Sonderzug. Golden October Austrian Steam Adventure

We are often asked for an Austrian tour and, well, we don’t do things by halves, so here it is and it’s a big one! This October the Austrian Railway Society at Ampflwang opens its doors with a steam festival. A week later sees a rare steam excursion on the Mariazellerbahn Railway. In between we feature more steam on the Achenseebahn and Zillertalbahn, Innsbruck’s Nordkettenbahn, the Gmunden Tramway, the Traunseebahn, boat trips on idyllic Austrian lakes, a brewery and a schnapps tasting. Built between 1885 and 1890 by the Midland Railway Company, the Midland Hotel was a showpiece for the railway company’s northern operations, with some of the finest Victorian interiors in the city. The Midland has hosted many Prime Ministers, plus famous entertainers like Laurel & Hardy, George Formby, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. In 1905 the Shakespearean actor Sir Henry Irving died on the hotel staircase following his appearance at the Theatre Royal, to be attended by his manager, Bram Stoker!
