Advanced alloys for demanding offshore environments Products made from advanced stainless steels and special alloys from Sandvik for well intervention, topside, subsea and downhole applications were on display at this year’s OTC 2013 in Houston, Texas, in May. “The oil and gas sector is one of our most important market areas and OTC 2013 provides us with the ideal opportunity to showcase our extensive materials technology and expertise to the widest possible audience,” said Nigel Haworth, Sandvik global sales and marketing manager, oil and gas. “Today, our products are used throughout the world on some of the deepest and most demanding wells. Offering the right material solutions allows oil and gas producers to keep their production safe, reliable and cost efficient.” Sandvik’s expertise in advanced stainless steels and other corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) means it has one of the most comprehensive product portfolios in the industry. The programme ranges from seamless and welded tube and pipe through to fittings and flanges, bar and hollow bar, wirelines, hot isostatic press (HIP) products in near-net shapes, Sandvik ClikLoc rapid action connector for riser applications, and welding consumables. Materials such as the hyper-duplex stainless steel grade Sandvik SAF 3207 HD offer seamless tube with higher yield strengths, providing the capability to withstand increased pressure. They also enable thinner wall umbilicals, which in turn reduce weight and reel sizes, helping to lower installation costs in deep sea applications. In aggressive and corrosive environments, downhole production casing and tubing strings can experience sour well conditions. High-alloy materials, such as Sanicro 28, have excellent resistance to severe conditions containing hydrogen sulphides, carbon dioxide and chlorides. For the production of products in near-net shapes, Sandvik provides powder metallurgically based hot isostatic pressing for the manufacture of complex components such as manifolds, swivels and wye-pieces. Sandvik operates a single source global solution for control and chemical injection lines, operating a dedicated service centre, backed up by extensive warehouse stocks. This ensures just-in-time deliveries, whether the requirement is for cut-to-length lines or a group of lines encapsulated, flushed, filled and delivered direct to site.
