With the growing U.S. economy, the increasing global production and the high demand for quicker shipping results, trucking companies have many immediate struggles as they work to keep up with the demand. The American Trucking Association (ATA) reported in January 2015 that driver turnover increased to an annualized rate of 97% in the third quarter of 2014. Additionally, during 2014, there was a shortage of drivers that exceeded 30,000 and at times neared 35,000. ATA estimates that the driver shortage could exceed 50,000 in 2015 and an alarming 240,000 by 2023. Some of the factors leading to this shortage are time spent away from home and family, wages, health concerns and newer federal regulations.

This was stated by the Secretary U.S. Department of Treasury Lawrence H. Summer at the International Transportation Symposium in October 2000. Even though this quote is from 15 years ago, the facts still hold true today. Transportation is the key to globalization. Manufacturing companies would not be able to obtain necessary resources or transfer finished goods without adequate transportation. Healthcare would not be able to receive required equipment and supplies without proper transportation. And the same can be said for every other industry.
