Speak Out June 2018

Hong Kong Speech Therapy Innovators

The speech therapy profession in Hong Kong has been chosen by the government to be the pioneers in moving to health professional registration. Speech therapists in Hong Kong will be the first health professionals to receive registration. The Hong Kong Institute of

Speech Therapists (HKIST), which consists only of volunteers, has been working very hard to develop systems and processes to meet the government requirements. As part of this journey, university entry to practice speech therapy programs have to undergo accreditation to confirm graduates meet the required competencies. The Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists has adopted the Speech Pathology Australia Competency Based Occupational Standards–Entry Level 2011. In April this year Stacey Baldac, Senior Advisor of Professional Standards, SPA travelled to Hong Kong to provide training to the future HKIST University Accreditors and participated in the accreditations of two Hong Kong universities. Speech therapists from academia, private practice and government organisations

gave up their weekend to participate in the one day training so they would be able to support the future of the HKIST university accreditation process. The opportunity to collaborate with international colleagues was a fabulous professional learning experience. And it is hoped that SPA and HKIST will have opportunities to work together in the future.
