Supervisor or mentor? It is important to remember that supervision and mentoring are different and while there is some overlap, supervisors and mentors require different skills and experience.

• Minimum three years clinical experience • Experience in supervising junior staff • Training in clinical supervision of staff • Well-developed clinical skills relevant to the current clinical population and work context you are working with • Skills adequate to evaluate competence in another Your supervisor will: • Work with you to develop goals and a plan to achieve these including time frames • Plan regular supervision meetings • Maintain documentation associated with supervision • May schedule annual performance reviews if they are also your line manger • Able to provide clear, specific , timely feedback • Well-developed listening skills • Able to guide, support, encourage and teach as required • Sound understanding of the difference between supervision and mentoring • Good knowledge of core SPA documents • Well-developed professional networks

• Minimum three years experience as a speech pathologist • Completed SPA webinar – all you need to know about the SPA mentoring program • Clinical skills do not necessarily need to be similar to those required for your current work place. While mentoring is a collaborative process, mentees are expected to drive the mentoring partnership, using the tools provided by the SPA mentoring program. A mentor would be expected to step in if: • Goals are not set • Contact is not regular • Able to provide clear, specific, timely feedback • Well-developed listening skills • Able to guide, support, encourage and teach as required. • Sound understanding of the difference between supervision and mentoring • Good knowledge of core SPA documents • Well developed professional networks
