Greener welding options from PWM

Cold welding offers wire and cable manufacturers a greener, more economical method of bonding non-ferrous wire and strip. The process takes place at ambient temperatures, so no dangerous or unpleasant fumes are generated and because cold welding creates a strong and reliable permanent bond, it also reduces material wastage and energy consumption. British company PWM, which celebrates 25 years of service to the wire and cable industry this year, has developed a comprehensive range of high performance cold welding machines and dies, designed and manufactured in its own workshops to high standards and specifications. PWM produces manually operated hand-held and bench-mounted models, versatile trolley-mounted machines and large electro/ pneumatic and electro/hydraulic powered rod welders. Welding capacities range from 0.08mm diameter up to 30mm diameter copper/aluminium. Precision engineered to provide strong reliable permanent bonds every time, PWM cold welders are very easy to operate. PWM’s best selling HP100 can now be supplied in automatic form.

The machine, which has a capacity of 1mm to 5mm diameter copper/aluminium, can operate in normal or automatic mode. Normal mode requires the operator to load the material and press the foot pedal four to six times to complete the weld. In automatic mode, the operator simply loads the material and presses a button and the machine does the rest.

The majority of PWM’s smaller welders are manually operated, and even the powered models in the range are extremely energy efficient compared with electrical butt welders. PWM’s powerful P1500 machine, for example, can weld copper rod up to 25mm diameter and aluminium to 30mm diameter, yet requires only a small current to drive the hydraulic pump motor.
