Sector Outlook You don’t need to be an exper t in maths to work in accountancy but an interest in business and some numerical aptitude will go a long way. A career in this profession could see you working in government, business, healthcare or the not for profit sector and could lead you into a diverse set of roles. Accountants go on to be auditors, tax exper ts, business owners, chief financial officers and more. Just as diverse is the work involved. Every organisation need financial management and tasks could include managing budgets, providing financial advice, dealing with insolvency cases or discussing a company’s profitability. Accountants work in private practice, public or management accountancy and qualify through professional bodies to fulfill these roles. A degree in accountancy or business/finance degree may be necessary. If you don’t have these, you could explore an apprenticeship route into a role such as accounting technician with GCSE’s or A levels. There are around 350,000 members of professional bodies in the UK with demand for accountants expected to increase in the coming years. Unlike other jobs, the need for financial management means the role is less affected by economic downturns. The accountancy industry is dominated by the big 4 firms of Deloitte, KPMG, E&Y and PwC. These four are major global players and actively recruit via their school leaver, intern and graduate programmes.
