DESTINATIONS

MASTERS IN AMUSEMENT As a luxury getaway that does things differently, Napili Kai’s specialty is giving guests a plethora of tools for making their own fun. Start your day with a seaside morning hike along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, then swim into the mild waters of Napili Bay and snorkel with resident sea turtles. In the afternoon, sip some fresh lemonade and take in a Hawaiian cultural presentation at the beach cabana. On Wednesdays, be sure not to miss the resort’s Masters of Hawaiian Music Slack Key Show at the Aloha Pavilion. This stunning showcase of Hawaiian musical talent is hosted by Grammy Award-winning guitarist George Kahumoku Jr., features different Hawaiian artists each week, and is a favourite pastime for Napili Kai guests young and old.

While it would be easy to wile away the hours of a honeymoon nestled in the quiet of this crescent-shaped bay, there is much about the little island of Maui that is not to be missed. 4:00AM: Rent a car for a day trip that starts with a very early, very worthwhile morning seeing the sunrise from the top of Haleakala, the island’s famous volcano and Maui’s highest peak. Thousands go early and get a good spot. 8:00AM: Afterward, drive the winding road back down through the clouds to Paia, a walkable little beach town known for its quaint boutiques and celebrity sightings. Grab a latte0 and a bagel from Paia Bay Coffee and stroll down to the beach to watch the morning surfers. Take some time and get lost browsing the town’s excellent vintage shops. 11:00AM: Driving back westward, stop in at The Mill House for a superb tapas lunch in a serene, eclectic setting, and if you have time for a detour, take your full stomach to Maui Brewing Co. for a taste of their strangely delicious pineapple beer. 4:00PM: From there, stop at a local grocery in Lahaina to stock up on Hawaiian staples such as Spam musubi, pre-made poke and a chilled bottle of sparkling pineapple wine before heading back to Napili Kai in time to toast the sunset. Ideal for honeymooners looking to escape somewhere elegant yet unfussy, this little jewel of a Hawaiian resort knows the value of keeping things simple.

Maui coastline

There are some places in the world where romance just seems to hang in the air. With its warm Pacific breeze, quiet blue water and laid-back, choose-your-own-adventure style, the intimate luxury resort of Napili Kai Beach Resort in Maui is that kind of place. Located in a well-groomed community on the island’s northwest shore, Napili Kai is not the place to find tourist luaus, or surf-worthy waves. With its sun-kissed golden sand, weekly Hawaiian guitar concerts, and unique family-style service, this home-away-from-home in the bay is perfect for honeymooners who prefer a high-end escape without putting on any airs. Romantic Na Hoku dinner

LOCO MOCO MEALS You’ll find no dinner dress or butler service here; Napili Kai’s typical guest prefers to stock his suite’s kitchen with local fruit from the market (or the generous mango tree just outside the lobby), and grill her fresh-caught fish at the communal barbecue pit. Those who do long to linger over a meal can do so at the onsite Sea House Restaurant, which serves up everything from poke nachos to authentic Hawaiian fare like its Molokai sweet potato frittata. Honeymooners shouldn’t miss the specially-designed Romantic Na Hoku (under the stars) dinner, which includes a four course meal with wine pairings at a torchlit table in a secret oceanfront location.

Preferring a low-rise condo concept that accentuates its cozy “welcome-home” climate, the studio suites at Napili Kai come with fully equipped kitchenettes, modern appliances, and complimentary WiFi. Sweeping oceanfront views allow for some choice winter whale watching from your private lanai, and the bathroom’s his and hers vanities is ideal for couples who don’t like to share. Cheery and spacious, the features in Napili Kai’s suites seem almost gratuitous; the resort’s long list of complimentary amenities, such as horticultural tours and morning coffee in the open-air lobby, means guests aren’t long for lingering in their rooms - no matter how comfortable.
