W hen The Bennies eventually decide to make a move, they do it with gusto. “I said, ‘Can you just do some signings for us?’” says Port Macquarie JB’s Music Co-ordinator, Anthony Lazzaro. “And apart from signing CDs and records, they signed everything: they signed the table, they signed the water cooler, they signed the walls, they signed the grass . It was mental.” The Melbourne punk-ska four-piece were one of the bands who ducked into the first ever JB pop-up stall at Port Macquarie’s Festival Of The Sun – now in its 14th year – in December. The stall was a joint effort between Lazzaro (a nine-year veteran attendee of the fest) and Simon Luke, FOTSUN’s founder and director, whom Lazzaro describes

into Port Macquarie JB, at which Lazzaro has worked since it opened five years ago. He asserts the township isn’t the “God’s waiting room” some people think, and that’s reflected in the kinds of music sold at the store. “It’s a mixed bag; we sell your bread and butter – Hendrix and Pink Floyd –

right through to today’s artists like Gang Of Youths. And a lot of the local kids are mad for LPs,” he says. Not unlike Lazzaro himself, whose collection is about as eclectic as it comes. “There’s

as the ultimate passionate fan of Aussie artists. The stall provided a spot for festival-goers to meet the line-up, get some happy snaps, and buy some music. “Pretty much every band came in and signed the backdrop,” says Lazzaro; he’s

too much out there, too many good bands,” he says, “so my collection – man, it’s all over the place. I’ve been flogging the Bad//Dreems album Gutful , because I saw them on the weekend and had them sign it, and I love Australian music. I’ve been listening to The Wall all over again because I’m going to see Roger Waters. Kasabian’s new album For Crying Out Loud . In the last few months I’ve gone nuts on all my old soundtracks,” he says, listing several John Barry and Bernard Herrmann scores. "I couldn’t tell you what my favourite genre is. Nina Simone, Beastie Boys, TV on the Radio, Brian Ferry, The Black Angels, Bootsy Collins, M83.” But is it organised? No, it is not. “Do you want to hear something horrible? I do this for work, but when I moved I just dumped it all on a shelf and said, ‘One day I’ll put it in alphabetical order, or chronological order, or, being a w--ker, in autobiographical order like they did in High Fidelity .”

referring to the amazing piece by local artist ‘Sigh’ (Simon Luxton), which adorned the back of the tent. “Bad//Dreems, Maddy Jane, Press Club, Ball Park Music, The Cactus Channel, Holy Holy… Kim Churchill! What a top bloke, he’s a great guy. Ivan Ooze – the crowd went nuts for them – and Sampa The Great, she’s just gorgeous.” Lazzaro stocked the stall with CDs and records from the line-up as well as a range of Aussie bands and classics, so that punters and artists could do a bit of a crate-dig: “Meg Mac bought Tom Petty’s Greatest Hits , and The Wall , Pink Floyd,” Lazzaro says.
