HEAD COACH JOHN MARTIN

Seniors Lori Robarge and Lisa Maner will lead the 1983 Toreras into their second season as an NCAA Divison I com– petitor. Last year saw the Toreras finish with a 10-14 record after playing their toughest schedule ever. With two years of experience, juniors Cindy Wheat (Cap– tain), Michele Rehrig , Marcia McEvers and Kim Crawford will be returning to form the core of the squad. Ellen Silber is back for her sophomore year with a year's experience behind her. The newcomers are led by junior college transfer Veronica Velez. A transfer from San Diego Mesa JC, Veronica was First Team All-South Coast Conference, Player of the Year (S.C.C.) and First Team All-State. Other newcomers include Betsy Gibbons, a junior in her second year at USO, freshmen Gina Trapeletti (St. Paul HS in Whittier) and Randi Tallman (Puyallup HS in Puyallup, WA). Coming off an excellent spring, the women are looking for– ward to a fine 1983 season .

John Martin has been the University of San Diego women 's volleyball coach since the pro– gram 's inception in 1975. In the 8 seasons John has been at USO the women have gone to post-tourna– ments three times, including a 4th place finish in the AIAW Small Col– lege Nationals in 1976, and two 5th place finishes in the 1977 and 1978 WAIAW Regionals.

Under coach Martin 's direction the USO volleyball program has grown from the Division II ranks to their current NCAA Division I status. John received both his B.A. and Master's Degree in History from San Diego State University. John, his wife Jane, daughter Eliza and son Patrick reside in Encinitas.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - con– veniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record at– tendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3500, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5000. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. In women's intercollegiate sports, USD fields programs in basketball, cross-country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
