Even a small company can change the world Located in Artjärvi, Finland, our factory has a view of fields and forests that has remained nearly unchanged for decades. In this natural setting, it is easy to find perspective on life: we are all but visitors. The coronavirus pandemic has altered our lives in many ways during the spring of 2020. Finns have grown even closer to nature, and more people have personally understood the importance of the environment and its bounty as a source of well-being. Likewise, many have gained a new appreciation for local Finnish production and small local businesses. In many ways these are all welcome changes. For nearly 40 years, we have made choices that reflect our respect for nature. Our products are made from responsibly produced organic natural fibres, every part of which we use. Products made with high-quality materials can and should be mended, and at the end of their lifespan natural fibres will decompose completely and return to the natural cycle. Through our actions we wish to show that even a small company can change the world. Our sincere thanks to you, our customers, for making the change possible with us. We have updated our web shop this year to provide even better service. In addition to introducing new products, we will also be showcasing the wonderful natural fibres we use and explaining our transparent production chain from start to finish.

Wool fleece with a clear conscience

Fleece made from genuine GOTS certified merinowool is a far cry from its artificial cousin. Wool is a breathing natural fibre and hence suitable for all seasons. Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is also non-flammable, which makes it safe to wear around a campfire. As a fully natural product, wool will biodegrade completely at the end of its lifespan and then return to the natural cycle.

BAND OF 11 - ACROSS GREENLAND WITH RUSKOVILLA An expedition of Erikoisrajajääkärikilta ry (special border jaeger guild) was off on a daring journey: their aim was to ski 600 kilometres across Greenland without assistance, along the Cold War era radar station line. The expedition had been planned for nearly three years but was almost stopped early on by violent storms and snow flurries. Seamless cooperation, careful preparations, and the correct equipment kept the party safe even in life-threatening conditions.

“I had the idea about an Arctic trek. Finnish expeditions have skied across Greenland’s continental glacier before, but none have visited the Cold War era radar station DYE-3, so we set that as our goal. We soon formed a party of 11 from members of the special border jaeger guild. Once we heard from some veterans in our first meet-up, namely the experiences of Henrik Reims from Arctic expeditions and Veikka Gustafsson’s from the Himalayas, that really lit our fire,” says Nestori Nurmi, leader of the expedition. A stormy start The expedition took some three years to prepare. Each member was assigned their duties – glacier skills, cooker boxes, polar bear encounters, etc. Once personal skills had been fully honed, they were meshed into a working unit on various training camps and hikes. No one could have predicted that those skills would be tested immediately at the very start of the expedition. “The flurries and poor visibility during the first week were quite the ordeal for us. The gusts on the sixth day were so violent that they tore up tents and tossed people across the glacier. Fortunately, careful preparations and training paid off.”

“The most memorable moment of the expedition was our arrival at the DYE-3 radar station. Initially, we thought we would just rest after a long day of skiing, but about 100 metres from the station we dug out the Finnish flag and triumphantly climbed the radar dome. Everyone was over the moon,” says Nurmi, reminiscing. Full marks for the hiking underwear An important part of the preparations was the selection of durable and suitable clothing and equipment. No compromises were allowed: only the best and proven would be accepted. As luck would have it, the party included a survival expert who had spent hundreds of days in the field and would choose the equipment. “Picking the wrong gear can be fatal in extreme conditions. The North Pole expedition of Laskuvarjojääkärikilta ry (paratrooper guild) had used Ruskovilla’s hiking underwear in 2016 to great effect. Some of our party members had also used Ruskovilla underwear during their military service and gave it glowing reviews.” “Synthetic fibres were unsuitable for these conditions. Not only was their thermal insulation poor, but they would also start to smell after a couple of days. There is no bathing out on the glacier, so I wore my hiking underwear for 33 days straight and had no issues. The fact that the products were made in Finland was also appreciated. There is no other underwear that I can even imagine wearing on future journeys,” says Nurmi.

THE FLAT SEAMER IS ARJA’S THING If your wardrobe has a Ruskovilla product made in the past 33 years, then Arja may well have had a finger in making it over her multifaceted career. Like Arja, many Ruskovilla employees have been working for the company for a long time. A desire to make high-quality products without the time pressure of piecework pay is shared by our nearly two dozen seamstresses.

The rapid ticking of machines and the lively murmur of conversation can be heard immediately as you step into the combined cutting, sewing and packing facilities in the old Artjärvi dairy building. Hunched over her machine by a window is Arja, who started her career at Ruskovilla in the autumn of 1987. “At the beginning there was just the founder Anneli and Manu and a few employees nearby in Kirkkotie. Over the years, I have worked in the packing room and the shop, but the flat seamer has become my thing over time. I particularly enjoy sewing men’s flies, which require high precision.” “I live close by, so in the winter I’ve been skiing to work across the lake Säyhtee. My colleagues have become like a second family to me and we share many interests, such as gardening. We exchange seedlings and have made excursions to visit gardens both in Finland and abroad”, describes Arja her time at Ruskovilla. Connected by shared values The story of Arja is a typical Ruskovilla career. People come and stay, and one of the two founders, Anneli Wahlsten, now over 80 years old, still actively participates in daily operations. The employees joke about “the sewing room girls”, although most are closer to being grandmothers.

“Our employees share a desire to make high- quality products from the best materials without hurry. We pay a monthly salary to ensure that everyone has enough time to do a good job. We don’t have a separate quality control department. Instead, everyone is responsible for the quality of their work before it gets to the next person. There is a final inspection in the packing section as the products are hand-folded into sales packaging,” says managing director Ossi Näkki. Family businesses have a choice Today, it is rare to see all the functions of a clothing business under the same roof from design to shipping. In Finland, no less. “As the family owners of Ruskovilla, we have been able to make choices in line with our values for nearly 40 years instead of chasing short-term profits. We have chosen peerless organic natural fibres, labour-intensive Finnish production methods, and the opportunity to employ local professionals here at Artjärvi,” says Näkki. Arja continues sewing a pair of green trousers. She glances out the window every now and then. Sometimes deer can be seen crossing the field, and the local guests have included a pooping fox and a raccoon dog litter of ten. Flocks of migratory birds also use Säyhtee as a rest stop in the spring and autumn. This is a good place to be.

ORGANIC SILK - THE MOST LUXURIOUS FIBRE IN THE WORLD The traditional silk production method has been preserved for thousands of years in the Qianjiang mountains of central China. Silkworms spin their cocoons is a milieu that is supports the well-being of both the nature and the caretakers. Out of these ingredients the only Nordic organic silk products are being produced.

Green slopes and valleys as far as the eye can see, low-hanging clouds, and a steady crunching sound. The sound is made by the larvae of the domestic silk moth as they munch on white mulberry tree leaves. This is the birthplace of now extremely rare organic silk in central China. Natural diversity ensures quality The annual world production of silk is approximately 70,000 tonnes, most of which is produced industrially. The industrial method involves growing enormous monoculture orchards that need support from artificial fertilizers and pesticides. This depletes the nutrients in the soil and damages the whole ecosystem. Because the quality of silk is largely dependent on what the silkworms eat, this inevitably impacts the quality of the fabric and clothing. Ran Longxiang, head of the Qianjiang organic silk farm, has good news for us. No artificial fertilizers or pesticides are used in the production of organic silk, and the silk farming imitates the natural environment of the mulberry trees by keeping the flora diverse. trees and animals enjoy a natural habitat among the silk farming plots.

The silk moths have undergone millennia of selective breeding and can no longer survive without humans. One kilogram of silk takes 10,000 silkworms and 250 to 300 kilograms of mulberry leaves to produce. The silkworms are hand-fed around the clock at the organic silk farm, and once they have eaten their fill, they will spin a silk cocoon, kokong, transforming the leaves into a splendid fibre. Caring for the people The farm is GOTS and BSCI certified, which means that taking care of the environment is not enough. These systems require an audit of the whole production chain by an independent third party with tracing available down to individual stages. The manual production method and high end product quality guarantee better earnings for the farm’s employees compared to industrial production. They work in a safe and fair environment. There are many steps to processing the silk before it lands on the workbenches of our professionals. We make products from three different natural fibres. Silkwool is more elastic than wool or silk, which should be taken into account with adult silkwool clothing in particular. The wool fabric will shrink slightly in the first washing. This has already been accounted for in the sizes – they will be a little loose prior to the first wash. Breathable and fire- safe organic wool for an active lifestyle We use mulesing-free organic merino wool that is up to seven times finer than that of Finnsheep. It makes for superbly comfortable clothing that is smooth against the skin. The brilliance of wool is how it adjusts to its wearer: it remains warm even when wet and allows sweat to evaporate. The fabric is highly elastic and fire-retardant. Wool is an easy-care material, as it neutralises odours naturally, meaning a good airing will often be all the cleaning it needs. Wool is an excellent choice for active lifestyles – our outdoor underwear has been carefully designed and tested in demanding conditions. Luxurious organic silk for sensitive skin

Our handmade organic silk has a notably higher quality than industrially produced silk. The long and uniform filaments make for soft and durable underwear. Silk assists in thermal regulation: it feels cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. The smooth surface of silk is like human skin, which makes it exceptionally comfortable even when wet. Silk is much more durable than generally thought, but it is sensitive to excessive sweating and long washing intervals. Many rheumatic, allergic, and other people with sensitive skin find relief in silk. Silkwool underwear all year round

Our organic silkwool comprises 30 per cent Chinese organic silk and 70 per cent South American organic wool. It is a versatile and elastic material for underwear and loungewear. Silkwool combines the best aspects of both natural fibres: the smoothness of silk and the warmth of wool. It adjusts to the wearer’s body heat, keeping them warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. Silkwool garments are suitable for all seasons. Their light weight allows them to be worn under daily clothes or packed in a bag for later use. Silkwool is a fine choice for daily activities and light incidental exercise, but it is thinner than merino wool and we recommend against its use during abrasive exercise and sports. In addition to the natural fibres above, we also make baby and children’s clothing from GOTS certified organic cotton. FROM SCRAPS INTO SOFT WOOL FILLING

Our sustainable clothes production is more than singular gestures or marketing tricks. It has been our way of life for nearly 40 years. Every stage from raw material farming to its return to nature is aimed at having harmony between people and nature.

In the current age of industrial production, it can be difficult to source organic natural fibres. Organic production is subject to strict requirements, including crop rotation, natural diversity, and workers’ rights, and it has taken us much work throughout the years to find reliable raw material suppliers. In the fall of 2019, we finally achieved a long-term goal when the last of our materials became fully organic. No rush, less waste Ruskovilla products are manufactured in an old dairy building in Artjärvi, Finland, built in 1927. We don’t use subcontractors and pay all our employees a monthly salary, allowing every stage of production to be planned with care. In the cutting room, the patterns are set to minimise the wastage of precious raw materials. The same precision and minimising of wastage are repeated at every step.

· 62 · SUSTAINABLE CLOTHES PRODUCTION

Turning scrap into new materials Small scrap pieces are an inevitable result of clothes production, but they can still be of use. We deliver all our scraps to Dafecor Oy in Turenki, Finland, where they are shredded and carded to make wool wadding. The wadding made of white wool and silkwool scraps is then shipped to Laatupeite Oy in Tampere, Finland, where they are used as filling for our bedding. The coloured scraps are turned into felt underlay for hardwood flooring, for example. Our high- quality raw materials are sought after by artisans as well. We sell small batches of wool wadding for crafts through our web shop. Silk scrap is carded and spun with Finnsheep wool to make hand knitting yarn. The edge strips of our wool fleece fabric have become popular carpet rags.

Biodegradable materials avoid microplastic pollution

All textiles wear out eventually, no matter how carefully you wash and keep them. When finally at the end of their lifespan, the 100% natural fibres with no synthetics in the mix will return fully to the natural cycle.

What does organic actually mean? A common belief is that natural fibres are organic in and of themselves, but not all have been produced organically. All our raw materials – silk, wool, silkwool, and cotton – are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, which ensures that they are eco- friendly and ethical. Organic production considers the well-being of animals, soil, and people from raw material production to end products. Attention is paid to the fertility of the soil and only natural fertilizers are allowed. No finishing agents are used in the Ruskovilla clothing produced from organic materials. This means that they are okay to wear immediately. There are specific criteria for the workers’ right of association, pay, and occupational safety – the use of child labour is absolutely prohibited. At the end of their useful life, natural fibres will decompose and return to the natural cycle.

We are located some 45 minutes from Lahti and Porvoo by car, about 60 minutes from Kotka, and only 90 minutes from the Helsinki metropolitan area, traffic permitting.
