For 170 years, Australia’s oldest family-owned winery has gone about the business of doing the little things brilliantly. For within each bottle all of Yalumba’s experience, history, diversity, and long-term vision are captured. The family’s love of wines, the coopers’ skill with oak, the winemakers’ adventurous spirits—these have all resulted in wines of great conviction.

Yalumba first began making wines at its Angaston winery 170 years ago, and the production of fortified wine has long been part of that history. By the early 1900s, Yalumba was supplying the world with these wines—from the connoisseurs of London’s gentlemen’s clubs to the British Raj in India. In fact, on Christmas Day 1929 a bottle of Yalumba Four Crown "Port" even found its way onto the table of Sir Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic Expedition. Following a 50-year-old tradition the very best barrels from each vintage continue to be selected and tucked away in the museum cellar, and it is from these time capsules the fortified collection is blended each year.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA yalumba.com

"Fortified wines allow us to create veritable time capsules in a glass. They

reflect the quality of our fruit, the strength of our combined endeavor in the vineyard and the cellar, as well as our mastery of an age-old winemaking world. They salute our tenacity, resilience and entrepreneurial spark throughout five generations of family winemaking. Through gold rushes and world wars, revolutions and depressions, financial crashes and digital transformations there has been one constant in Australian wine— Yalumba's fortified collection." —Jane Ferrari Yalumba Storyteller

Eden Valley, SOUTH AUSTRALIA henschke.com

The Henschke family have been making wine since 1868, and today fifth generation Stephen and Prue are widely recognized for wine quality, innovation and sustainability in the vineyard, and their role as custodians of the land. Stephen and Prue continue to craft their white wines with a focus on purity, while their red wines have a strong focus on terroir, using traditional winemaking techniques.

"Prue and I are the current ‘keepers of the flame.’ Just as earlier generations have done, we want to manage the vineyards so they can be passed on to the next generation in better condition than we inherited them. The last 50 years have been an incredible journey for the Australian wine industry. Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are arguably the two oldest single vineyard wines produced in this country that tell the wine story of Australia." —Stephen Henschke

It remains family owned, with the simple aim of producing “the best possible wine.” Accolades such as NewWorld Winery of the Year 2017 (Wine Enthusiast) and Winemaker of the Year 2012 (Gourmet Traveler Wine) are a testament to the winery’s leadership position in the Margaret River, and wines that sit among the world’s finest. Coal River Valley, TASMANIA tolpuddlevineyard.com

Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley was planted in 1988. The climate is cool and dry— ideal conditions to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality. It was purchased in 2011 by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, who believe it is one of Australia’s great single vineyards. The wines show great vineyard character, with a core of intense natural acidity, savory fruit flavors and lots of complexity even when young. The Chardonnay is fine and precise with firm acidity, and a combination of lightness of texture and intensity of flavor. The Pinot Noir is intensely aromatic, balanced with savory spice notes from the whole bunch fermentation, along with purity of varietal expression, fresh acidity and firm tannins.

Central Otago, NEWZEALAND twopaddocks.com

SamNeill started Two Paddocks in 1993 with modest ambitions to produce a good Pinot Noir that would be enjoyed by family and friends. Although production is still limited, Sam now owns vineyards in all four major sub-regions of Central Otago (Bannockburn, Gibbston Valley, and the Cromwell and Alexandra Basins.) The estate Pinot Noir is a barrel selection of the older estate vineyard blocks that consistently produce some of the very best fruit. In years when the crew believe that the vineyards have produced an extraordinary expression of site, a small single vineyard offering is released: The First Paddock, The Last Chance and The Fusilier.

Constantia, SOUTH AFRICA kleinconstantia.com

Described as one of the world’s most beautiful vineyards, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees and lush greenery on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, with superb views across the Constantia Valley and False Bay. The 360-acre (146-hectare) estate originally formed part of Constantia, a vast property established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. This particular valley was chosen not only for its beauty, but also for the decomposed granite soils on its slopes, gently cooled by ocean breezes. Klein Constantia’s lusciously sweet wine, Vin de Constance, rose to prominence in the 1800s. It was savored by the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, and Thomas Jefferson. Today, Klein Constantia continues to make some of South Africa’s top wines and world-class dessert wines, which reflect the cool Constantia climate and historic traditions.
