UD targets fully electric autonomous trucks by 2030

U D Trucks announced the launch of ‘Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030’ – an Innovation Roadmap that aims to deliver a variety of solutions for smart logis- tics, including fully-electric and autonomous trucks leading up to 2030. True to UD Trucks’ vision to provide the trucks the world needs today, the innova- tion roadmap takes a step-by-step approach together with customers to offer commer- cialised solutions for selectedautomationand electromobility applications from2020, with a view towards fully fledged commercialisa- tion by 2030. Demand for parcel delivery is expected to grow 50% by 2030 compared to 2014. To meet this demand, the logistics industry faces significant challenges, including: a responsibil- ity to reduceCO 2 emissions; thegrowing scale of online commerce; anddriver shortages. UD Trucks believes that transformative innova- tionsinautomationandelectromobilityarekey to overcoming these challenges and providing customers with trucks that fit their needs. “When delivering on our promise to pro- vide the trucks and services the world needs today, we have always done things a bit dif- ferently from others in our industry. As we now look forward, we are convinced that the

from customer driving behaviour, UD Trucks also gains insight on how to design even safer and more dependable trucks. “SincethelaunchoftheNewQuonin2017, UD Trucks has moved steadily forward on its mission to drive the future of smart logistics. This innovation roadmap represents a major leap forward for both the company, the logis- tics industry, and our society,” said Douglas Nakano, Senior Vice President of UD Trucks Technology. “We are committed to ensuring that our customers around theworld feel the full benefits of the solutions and products we aredeveloping, whichwill ultimatelymake life better for everyone in our society.” Over the course of 2018, UD Trucks will conduct demonstrations of autonomous driving and electric drive prototypes, tar- geting field tests and customer trials ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show 2019. It aims to have vehicles in actual daily operation by the year 2020. q

world needs smart logistics,” said UD Trucks chairman, Joachim Rosenberg, during the roadmap’s announcement at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo. UD Trucks’ progress in automation is in- spired by Fujin, the god of wind, who symbol- ises the power ofmovement, while itswork in electromobility is inspiredbyRaijin, thegodof thunder, who symbolises thepower of energy. With its ‘Fujin&RaijinVision2030’, UDTrucks is committed to developing smarter logistics solutions in the following key areas: • Automation: Automation will reshape the logistics industry, creating real-life benefits for both customers and society in terms of productivity, safety, energy and fuel efficiency. UD Trucks is now focusing on solutions for safe, low-speed automa- tion in confined areas, including in-plant and harbour logistics. It is also exploring on-road auto pilot and cruise control) technologies in the near term, along with more highly automated on-road vehicles in the long term. • Electromobility: UD Trucks is committed toreducingtheenvironmentalimpactofits products. The company is now developing technologiestocreatesilent,zero-emission vehicles that maximise energy efficiency, payload capacity and mileage. As battery systems continue to evolve, UD Trucks is testing a variety of solutions, including battery EV, parallel HEV and series HEV. • Connectivity and digitalisation: Con nectivity through digitalisation is the enabler of both automation and electro- mobility. In Japan, UD Trucks has around 45000vehiclesconnectedthroughtheUD Information Service, which uses data col- lected from each vehicle to help improve uptime. By analysing digital data collected

The first ever ATMOsphere networking event, in association with shecco, will be held during FRIGAIR 2018, giving the expo an international flair and promoting the uptake of natural refrigerants in South Africa and beyond. The opportunity is ripe for natural refrigerants to take centre stage in global efforts to reduce the climate impact of HEVAC&R technologies. As countries begin to implement the Kigali Amendment to theMontreal Protocol, which aims to phase downHFCs worldwide, theATMOsphere conferences provide a platformnot just to showcase the latest technolo- gies, but also to address industry problems and find viable solutions to them. With this event, coinciding with FRIGAIR, South Africa will become the ninth country to host one of the ATMOsphere conferences and networking events. Attendees can look forward to topics including: A look at the global refrigerant phaseout; International trends; What is shecco doing internationally; How are natural refrigerants progressing locally; CO 2 project case studies in South Africa; and End-user experiences in working with CO 2 as a refrigerant. Frigair 2018 and ATMOsphere will take place at Hall 3, Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 7 June 2018 from 15:00 until 19:00 and is free to attend. www.frigairexpo.co.za
