YOUR QUESTIONS on Church doctrine, morals, history, theology - any subject raised in matters of faith - are welcomed. Your question may be one that many fellow Cathollcs have wondered about. In order to obtain the Church's approval of your second marriage you would have to produce convincing evidence before the bishop's Marriage Tribunal that your first marriage was no real marriage. I would consider this a gigantic task m your situation, after 30 years of married life with your first husband. Could you approach the sacraments in good conscience? You will have to answer this question for yourself depending on how you judge your relationship with God. Bernard Haring, one of our leading moral theologians, suggests that remarried divorcees who are in good faith ,by this he means that they live a dedicated ist1an life in their econd marriage ) should feel free to receive the sacrament (cf. Jurist No. l, 1970, or Concilium, The Future of Marriage as an In- stitution, May 1970). F\\

r gard their sexual liberties as expressions of "true love " Love is a difficult standard to apply because pf the possibility of self-deceptid'n. It is precisely the egotistic and narcissistic person who is most convinced that all of his sexual acts are motivated by unselfish love. Sexual activities among the young have skyrocketed, ac- cording to reliable statistics. Yet there is no evidence that thereby our young people have become more loving, or more committed, or less alienated and less unhappy. I take this as an indication that most of their sexual ac- tivities are irresponsible and lack true human values, such as would be capable of building meaningful interpersonal relationships. .
