Abraham answered this clear call with faith. He believed in the word lhal had come to him, and he believed in the One who spoke the word. Though the message was hard to bear, his faith, his belief sustained him and carried hitn on his way. He did not "dally with doubt" or find an excuse lo forget the whole affair. He heard the call, he believed, he responded Abraham lived his life in just this way, God spoke, Abraham heard, believed, acted. Today, 4,000 years after Abraham we see the same staunch and beautiful faith in one we know, a leader we respect and esteem, a father and friend, whom we love and admire. He too has received a call; he too has responded because he, like Abraham. believes. He believes in the word he has received. He - ..

Scripture: "This is the victory over the world, our faith." We forget that it is not enough to believe that God exists, but we must also respond to his word with a response that is wholehearted, willing, trusting and loving. And so we turn to our bishop and say in the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians: "Since, then, I heard of this faith of yours in the Lord Jesus and the practical way in which you are expressing it toward fellow Christians, I thank God continually for you and I never give up praying for you; and this 1s my prayer: That God, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ and the all-glorious Father, will give you the spiritual wisdom and the insight to know more of Him; that you may receive that umer illumination of the Spirit which will make you realize • • •

Is society a big machine and the person only a cog in the works? Father Shipley asked "Take away the people and see where society is," he suggested. "People are primary and their relationship in society is secondary. ' Responsibilities Cited "Those making laws should have to prove there is no coercion in the laws, and the burden of proof is on the one making the law and not on the one wanting to be free," Father Shipley said of the responsibilities of leadership. He also noted that the structure of society is changing. He cited the experience of Saul Alinsky, noted social actionist, on the new pat- terns of social organization. Alinsky, Father Shipley said, has discovered that his old meth o organizing by neighborhoods no longer work . People now organize on the basis of joint ac- tivities, where they work on a common problem, Alinsky discovered .
