Charming Towns in Spain

MEDIEVAL TOWNS

A stroll through the streets of Sos del Rey Católico (Zaragoza, Aragón) is an experience not to be missed. Take a walk around the outside of the town so you can really appreciate the di- mensions of the city walls in one of the prettiest towns in Aragón. This is where Ferdinand the Catholic was born, in the Palace of Sada, an extraordinary build- ing in dressed stone. The route continues through Castile- León with a stopover in the peaceful town of Almazán (Soria). Head for the Puerta de Villa gateway to reach the beautiful Plaza Mayor where you'll find the Palace of the Hurtado Mendoza family and the Church of San Miguel.

a a HONDARRIBIA GUIPÚZCOA

The itinerary starts in Hondarribia , a delightful town on the coast of Guipúzcoa, surrounded by a medieval wall . The historical old town opens up like a maze of narrow, cobbled streets with beautiful Basque-style houses and wooden balconies painted in pret- ty colours. Laguardia (Álava) preserves its me- dieval layout, with one building after another displaying coats of arms and Gothic windows. There are more than 300 underground wine cellars, many of which can be visited. In the Alava- La Rioja region you'll find some of the best wines in Spain. The monuments in Estella-Lizarra (Navarre) will leave you speechless. It started out as a stage on the Way of Saint James and has an extraordinary artistic heritage featuring the Palace of the Kings of Navarre and the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa.
