JSM - Edition Two

Y ear 5 A rt Year 5 have been following a curriculum that is currently being implemented in the Philippines, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba where women are taught how to create cottage industries in order to support themselves and their children out of the poverty cycle. This unit involved students making a range of jewellery items using recycled magazine pages to create paper beads, which are then assembled to complete the product. After learning about some of the challenges faced by children around the world, along with the impact that a lack of recycling can have on the global community, the Year 5 students learnt the skills that are required in order to produce a saleable product. Each student created a product independently, which is used for their assessment. The students then worked in their Inquiry groups to manufacture a range of products, which we encourage you to purchase here for a gold coin donation. All proceeds go back to the NGO! The processes involved with this unit not only encourage reflection on the challenges of others and the opportunities we have to help, but also on team work, collaboration and entrepreneurship.
