SPEAKER

MeetAndrew

My name is Andrew McLaughlin. I am 12 years old and will be in the 7th grade next year at St. Mary’s Hales Corners. I love sports and stay active by participating in soccer, baseball, basketball and track. I also play the trumpet in the school band. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November, 2014. My family and I have enjoyed going to many JDRF events. These events help us to learn how to take care of my diabetes. It is also a great way for us to meet other children with diabetes and their families.

I feel very lucky to have the support of my family, my health care team, my school, my friends and JDRF. Having diabetes is hard but it doesn’t stop me from doing the things I enjoy. Please join us at the reception to hear Andrew’s story

THE GOAL

Blue Circle Fund

The Blue Circle Fund supports organizations with specific needs for type 1 diabetes research in southeastern Wisconsin. Donations for the Blue Circle Fund are raised through various events and on-course challenges at Tee Up Fore the Cure. In 2016, the Blue Circle Fund met its goal to purchase vital equipment for a research study at Max McGee National Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The equipment (shown

to the right) freezes and maintains blood samples from siblings of those with type 1 diabetes in order to study the genetic link that leads to the development of diabetes. This year, the Blue Circle Fund’s goal is to raise additional funds

for the Max McGee Center to upgrade its 20-year-old software and server used to store the study’s data and sample information (see sample to the right). Data from more than 2,000 individuals from 500 families, some of which have been sampled and studied for a decade, are housed in this equipment. You can support the Blue Circle Fund in a number of ways. • Participate in the Blue Circle Pull in which a $20 donation wins you a gift card, golf balls or even a Brewers jersey signed by Hall of Famer, Robin Yount! • Improve your team’s score by participating in various on course events such as Play It Forward and the Par 3 Betting Hole.

• Join us at the reception for a special auction with a couple surprises!

The data leads to early detection of the disease and better treatments. With the help of updated equipment, a cure will eventually be found.

CHARITIES

McGee Center

The Max McGee Research Center is associated with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Together they have established an internationally recognized center for diabetes research. There are many different areas of diabetes research; however, the main focus of this research center is to find why and how type 1 diabetes occurs. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin is home to one of the largest diabetes treatment programs in the nation, currently following more than 1,200 children with diabetes. This patient volume provides the breadth of data necessary for the type of research the McGees envisioned.

CHARITIES

JDRF remains dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes as its highest priority.

Until a cure is within more immediate reach, JDRF is committed to keeping individuals with type 1 diabetes healthy and reducing the burden of living with the disease by improving glucose control with drugs and devices, including the development of artificial pancreas systems. Additionally, as part of a comprehensive research program on type 1 diabetes, JDRF is funding research to further understand the underlying causes of the disease to develop strategies to prevent the disease from occurring in future generations.
