FOAM PRODUCTS CONTROL NOISE USING THE SUCCESSFUL ‘BARRIER / LAYER PRINCIPLE’

Quietlife products have a name to live up to, which is why we choose only the best materials for our noise control products. Unlike some soundproofing products on the market, we have not compromised on the important noise absorption qualities. Others may look similar - but do they perform as well? Check out the facts first, we have nothing to hide... NOTE 1 - THE FACING We offer two facings as standard, both are RCD approved, being impervious to oil, water and diesel. • ‘O’ foil facing - Fireproof to BS476, has a light reflective, reinforced silver finish and is our most popular type • White glass cloth - Durable, hard wearing finish for engine rooms, walkways and lift hatches NOTE 2 - THE ABSORPTION LAYER Fireguard foam is black class ‘O’ fire foam with a fire rating to BS476 Part 6, 1998 and Part 7, 1971 (only Rockwool; meets BS476 Part 4, 1988 for Class V Vessels). It will not burn, even with a blow torch applied. It is high density to 96m 3 and offers the best in sound absorption. It carries class ‘O’ approval and it will help act as a fire barrier. Fireguard foam is an open cell foam ensuring the sound travels the furthest distance, and so offering maximum absorption. The absorption layer removes much of the high frequency sound and is offered in various options - see pages 262-263.

SOUNDPROOFING NOTE 3 - THE BARRIER This is where some other soundproofing products lack the performance of Quietlife. Always check the weight of the barrier layer. For the best mass and low frequency sound absorption we use lead or 5kg/m 2 polymeric barriers. Some products on the market use only a 3kg or even 2kg barrier. More mass means more sound deadening. Lead is the best, but the modern lead loaded polymeric materials achieve almost the same result - and save money. Lead barrier is the preferred choice when fitting to a curved surface as it retains its shape, while polymeric prefers to stay flat. 2 Quiet types feature two 5kg lead loaded barriers to absorb high levels of low frequency noise. NOTE 4 - THE MOUNTING FOAM This layer uses the same BS476 ‘O’ foam as the absorption layer. Its purpose is to isolate the barrier from the mounting surface which helps eliminate noise transfer. A 6mm layer of mounting foam is used on all types. NOTE 5 - THE BONDING PROCESS To make the familiar Quietlife product, the above materials are factory bonded to form a sandwich. The bonding process coats the material with adhesive, ensuring that the entire surface is fully coated. The coated materials are then pressed together using nip rollers to guarantee the strongest possible bond. This process has been designed to virtually eliminate delamination (break down of materials). We are extremely proud of the Quietlife quality and have purposely chosen this manufacturing method over cheaper alternatives in order to provide you with the best possible products.

SOUNDPROOFING

Soundproofing sheets are available in varying thicknesses, which offer different sound absorption properties. The thicker the foam and greater the mass, the better the resulting noise absorption. Space, cost and sometimes weight limitations all play their part, but remember some soundproofing is better than none at all.

Soundproofing sheets can be mixed and matched to suit your thickness requirements. Simply contact us on 01502 716993.
