Today’s female collectors are much more discerning when purchasing timepieces. It’s not enough to shrink a man’s watch and cover it in diamonds, or to have a feminine pattern on the dial. Collectors are looking for complications, mechanical movements and, of course, pure artistry and impeccable execution. And if a watch has a quartz movement, it had better be so beautiful that the movement is the last thing on your mind. While Bulgari’s Serpenti watches have been one of brand’s most iconic pieces since the 1960s, it’s surprising to realize that there has never been a cuff-bracelet watch. The artisans at Bulgari recently presented a Jewelry Watches

timepiece you didn’t even know you were missing, but now you have to have. The Serpenti Seduttori, or seductive serpent, mirrors the recent Serpenti jewelry collection by focusing on the head of the snake; it is topped with a cabochon stone, here a 16-carat sapphire, and mesmerizing ruby eyes. To read the time, peek inside the snake’s jaws to find a stunning diamond dial powered by a quartz movement. This high jewelry timepiece is made from 18K white gold and has 13.80 carats brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds. Not all jewelry watches need to have secret or gem-set dials. Jaeger-LeCoultre has played with

the Reverso for over 85 years, and its most recent high jewelry piece is an homage to its enduring appeal, Art Deco aesthetics and the house’s expertise in both watchmaking and gem setting. Jaeger-LeCoultre is famous for its tiny mechanical movements in ladies watches, here using hand-wound Caliber 844 that measures only 3.45mm in height and offers a 38-hour power reserve. The master gem setters showcase their skill with 250 baguette-cut diamonds totaling 5.65 carats on the case. There are two dials, one mother-of-pearl with black Arabic numerals and the other black aventurine and diamonds with an iconic pattern tracing the hours.

BRAND PROFILE MANUFACTURE ROYALE Watch companies are proud of their heritage and longevity. While Manufacture Royale’s modern era is quite new, its pedigree is special. The famous philosopher Voltaire founded Manufacture Royale in 1770, to create watches that reflected his values. It closed when he died, and reopened in 2010. Its modern mission is to honor haute horlogerie practices and values, and blend them with creativity and the latest advances in watchmaking. Each beautiful movement is designed and created in Vallorbe, Switzerland, imagining what Voltaire would make 1. Opera This unique timepiece combines both a minute repeater and a tourbillon in an unfolding case, which amplifies the sound of the repeater when expanded. The entire mechanism is visible, so you see all moving parts of the repeater. MATERIAL MATTERS Roger Dubuis’ SIHH reveals are eagerly anticipated in the watch community, with everyone wondering what tradition he is going to turn on its head. The Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt is not entirely new, but the updates are bold and exciting. The big news is the material used in the case, bezel, case back and crown, a cobalt chrome alloy used in aeronautics and this year making its horology debut. Through a patented MicroMelt process, alloys are melted and atomized into a powder using a high-pressure stream of gas, it then undergoes several additional procedures before Roger Dubuis processes the unique material. It is corrosion-resistant and very durable, and the process allows previously impossible combinations of materials. It uses the RD101 caliber with its namesake four balance wheels set in the corners at 45° angles, which counter the effects of gravity on the movement. The chrome, blue and red color scheme is sporty and unique. While the original Excalibur Quatuor was released four years ago, so few have been made that you are unlikely to run into anyone wearing one. THE ONES TOWATCH 2017

After last year’s successful launch of the all-new DB11, there is a whole raft of new Aston Martins scheduled for delivery in the coming years. It’s an ambitious program of expansion (dubbed the “second century plan”) that kicks off this fall with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage . At about the same time we may get sight of the new Audi A8 , which will carry a lot of clever new tech. Expect a car able to drive itself that also comes with a Siri-like personal digital assistant, able to tell you when you need to depart to arrive on time plus when and where to stop for fuel along the way. Lexus is in the middle of a complete overhaul and the next in the range to get that striking new look is the new Lexus LC . Due in the spring, it should cost about $150,000. There are also rumors of a convertible version of the Lexus RC, which might arrive at the tail end of the year. Also going open top is Ferrari’s ferociously quick hybrid LaFerrari. It gets the convertible treatment with the arrival of the Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta , but advance sales have been so strong that the entire line is already sold out. Elsewhere from Italy comes the Maserati Alfieri . After focusing on four-seat grand tourers, this marks a welcome return to something more graceful and sporty. The AMG wing of Mercedes will continue to thrill this year first with a new AMG GT Roadster and AMG GT C Roadster (the latter will boast a 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 generating 548bhp and will be capable of 0-60 in under four seconds) as well as an insane new sedan, the AMG E63 (which will come with a 612bhp V8). If you are in the market for a high-performance, luxury sedan then there is good news from BMW , which finally applies its M badge to the 7-series. The M760i will boast

From the top: Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

a whopping twin-turbocharged, 6.6-liter V-12 engine with 600bhp. If you prefer your sedan to deliver more luxury, try the Mercedes Maybach S650 – it is expected to be something akin to a five-star hotel on wheels. There is also talk of the new Range Rover Sport Coupé due later in the year (with more than a hint of the popular Evoque about its looks).

First drive Audi S5

The same, but better was the message at the launch of the new Audi S5 Coupe. First impressions suggest the update has achieved the objective of being evolution more than revolution, bringing the S5 in line with other Audis (with the imposing single front grille), while keeping true to the spirit of the S5, with its distinctive shoulder line and aggressive stance. Since its launch in 2007, the S5 has been a massive seller for Audi all around the world. Playing well to Audi’s sporty heritage, it draws on a lineage dating back to the original Audi Quattro. But looks can deceive and this is more than a slight tweak. It is a completely new car, with new components from the chassis up. It manages to be longer and wider than the old model, but 132lb lighter, more aerodynamic and (yes, Audi still discusses these things) more fuel-efficient. Inside, there’s more “same but better.” Audi interiors have long been noted for quality – both in terms of materials and layout. There is no drop off here, although stepping into the S5 reinforces this as a new car. The on-board technology is impressive. There are, for example, 30 driver assistance systems on board. There is also the option for Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, which allows drivers to define the dashboard setup, allowing it to show the most relevant information in any situation. The S5 driven also boasts heads-up display and too many gadgets to play with in one drive. In truth, few owners fully use the technology available on their car. It is surely time for carmakers to stop adding functionality until drivers can catch up. Mind you, with cars almost able to drive themselves, it gives drivers something to do.

But before we give up driving entirely, there is plenty of fun to be had here. The S5 boasts a slick, 8-speed tiptronic gearbox and a meaty 350bhp, 3.0-liter V6 TSFI quattro engine. It offers a selection of driving modes; in dynamic mode it offers great agility on tight country roads (where it handles wonderfully and makes the right noises when you want it to); while in comfort mode it’s perfect for built-up traffic or long stretches of highway. In short, it’s more of the same, but better.

BLUE SKY DAWNING NIO EP9

Anyone wondering how either the arrival of the all-electric Formula-E racing championship would affect the future of the car industry, or what impact an increasingly active Chinese automotive sector will have, gets two answers in one with the new all-electric Chinese supercar, the Nio EP9. Launched in London late last year, the Nio EP9 is a stunning addition to the super sports car market. And it comes from NextEV, the Chinese firm that has been a successful

part of the Formula-E setup since it launched in 2014. The firm’s Chinese name, Weilai, translates as Blue Sky Coming, and the Nio EP9 boasts the look and feel of a car of the future. But with six cars already produced, this has moved beyond a prototype but is not yet up to full production. The performance figures are impressive (but some vital EV numbers are missing, such as range or battery charge time) with its Nürburgring lap time

of a fraction over seven minutes and five seconds, the fastest ever for an electric car. It boasts a top speed of 195mph and goes from a standstill to over 120mph in seven seconds. The company claims the aerodynamics are so sophisticated it has twice the downforce of a F1 car, with drivers experiencing over 3Gs while driving. Expect your grin to look a little lopsided should you take a selfie while driving. nio.io/ep9 $2m

Men’s style

PALE AND INTERESTING While bright yellow, shades of pink and printed pieces were some of Spring’s biggest trends, quiet colors are a sleeper trend seen on the streets, not just on the runway. At Ermenegildo Zegna, a suit so pale pink it almost seems white is a beautiful suit for spring and summer. Far from Miami Vice , but still interesting enough to turn heads, wear to a dressy dinner on vacation as well as to work. Jeffrey Rüdes’ 1970s-inspired collection has both flares and more traditional cuts. A white suit is a difficult look to pull off, but we think Rüdes hits the mark with this simple styling and fantastic fabric. A light blue zip-up leather jacket worn with even paler loose-fitting trousers from Canali is a great look for creative men. The separates work nicely for gentlemen who aren’t so adventurous in their wardrobe, and they have Canali’s perfect cuts and finishings.

Abstract artist Ian Davenport based his handbag on his Colorfall paintings

The Lady Dior Project

GIUSEPPE FOR JENNIFER LOPEZ He’s known for his sexy shoes; she’s known for, well everything, including her killer sense of style. A collaboration between superstar Jennifer Lopez and designer Giuseppe Zanotti is exactly what the fashion world did not know they were waiting for. Zanotti says Lopez was “more than a muse, Jennifer was a great design partner.” The result: a capsule collection of six modern styles, with less glitz than you would expect from a performer. While the high-heeled gladiator sandals would be right at home on stage or walking the red carpet, there are several wearable sandals, and even a flat sandal plus wedge sneaker. Giuseppe for Jennifer Lopez sandal, $795, available online at giuseppezanottidesign. com

Building on the success of its collaboration with artist Marc Quinn last summer, Dior expands the Lady Dior Project by giving six artists total carte blanche to bring their art to the Lady Dior bag and accessories. The bag’s iconic shape and signature charms lend itself well to this type of collaboration; it’s instantly recognizable as Dior, but it serves as a blank canvas for the artists to explore different ways of interpreting their art. Each artist’s bag is wildly different and true to their art. Meeting a wide range of artist’s demands pushed Dior’s artisans to use innovative techniques. Mat Collishaw’s pieces are high-definition prints of butterflies on glazed leather. For Jason Martin, the house used a special technique to create curves up to ¾ inch on the leather to recreate his unique paintings that play with texture.

In his work, English abstract painter Ian Davenport takes syringes of paint and applies them vertically on aluminum or stainless steel panels, letting gravity spread and mix the paint at the bottom of the work. Below, Ian reproduced a sequence from his series of paintings Colorfall on the silver leather. The stripes of colors “melt” together at the bottom of the bag. The inside of the bag is a print Ian designed after his studio’s paint-splattered floor. Other artists who contributed to the Lady Dior Project include Matthew Porter, Chris Martin and Daniel Gordon. These bags will be revealed around the world – from Miami to London to Dubai. Available at Dior Lady Art Pop-Up Boutique until February 28, 201 North Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, California, US. dior.com

CAPTIVATING CORAL

Vhernier Cardinale Chain necklace in 18K rose gold with coral. $43,400, Vhernier in New York, Daniel Morales, +1 646 343 9551, vhernier.it

Coral jewelry is increasingly precious due to overfishing and the effects of climate change. Its sourcing and trade is highly regulated, and rightly so. From soft pinks to the highly sought-after deep reds, our pick of coral pieces from prestigious jewelry houses allows you to wear the stunning pieces without a weight on your conscience. To own a piece of jewelry history, look no further than Van Cleef & Arpels Heritage bracelet. Originally created in 1972, the house reacquired the coral bracelet and is once again available; it features 75 coral beads and 82 diamonds. Cartier’s Étourdissant bracelet captures the spirit of the Côte d’Azur, with waves of coral and diamonds set in rose gold. From its iconic high jewelry collection Diva’s Dream, Bulgari’s fan-shaped coral earrings are inspired by ancient Roman mosaics. While Vhernier might be

best known for its architectural swirls, we love the Cardinale collection with square stones; the chain necklace has seven pieces of coral set in rose gold. Meanwhile Sutra’s ring features soft-pink cabochon- and marquise-cut coral surrounded by diamonds.

urquoise Ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Persians, Aztecs and Native Americans all wore turquoise, making it one of the world’s oldest forms of jewelry. Today’s designers create beautiful pieces that aren’t at all folksy, but rather elegant artistic expressions. Turquoise can have a matrix, or veins, which are markings left by the host rock. While stones without a matrix have higher values, the matrix itself can be very beautiful and add visual interest to the stones. David Webb’s ring has a carved turquoise ball with a beautiful black matrix, set off with green enamel and white diamonds. From his Bamboo collection, this necklace by John Hardy has natural Arizona turquoise beads mixed with carved sterling silver beads. John Hardy will plant 49 bamboo seedlings for each necklace purchased as part of its sustainable luxury program. The Capri collection from Pomellato evokes the famous blue waters that surround the island; the round stones even look like bubbles. Designer Luna Scamuzzi creates bold, organically-shaped jewelry for her label Lucifer Vir Honestus. Each piece is handmade using a 15th century wax-molding technique. The Trofeo earrings have large pear-shaped turquoise and her signature nature-inspired gold posts. At De Grisogono, designer Fawaz Gruosi used turquoise in his Melody of Colors collection. These earrings feature 48 cabochon-cut turquoise, 18 marquise-cut aquamarines and 232 blue sapphires.

LightStim LED Bed said to promote total body wellness

Technology

Light Years ahead Light Emitting Diode (LED) are used in many things from televisions to car headights. Less well known are its health properties, and it is these that the LightStim LED Bed draws on. It claims to offer a “soothing, natural and non-invasive treatment that promotes total body wellness and peak physiological function.” More specifically, the LED Bed is said to be good for fixing wrinkles, acne and building collagen. But there is a medical angle here as well – indeed it’s technology tested by NASA to heal wounds. LED light treatment is said to use four different light wavelengths to boost the body’s production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), that carries energy within cells to where it is needed. It boosts nitric oxide, protects against cardiovascular disease, improves post-exercise recovery, improves circulation and releases endorphins. And despite looking like a tanning bed, it protects the skin from UV damage. The bed is available to buy and treatments are available at selected spas and wellness retreats. lightstim.com $65,000
