 Advise each reference that the school will keep source information confidential.  Ask each reference whether he or she would re-hire the applicant.  Document all information obtained, e.g., date, time, source name, contact information, and comments.  Consider obtaining a copy of the applicant’s personnel file(s) when:  All former and current employers have a policy of providing no information or providing only basic information, e.g., employment dates.  If the applicant does not want the school to contact his or her current employer, then ask the applicant to provide a sealed copy of his or her personnel file.  If the candidate is applying for a position which has educational requirements, verify the candidate’s education with the college/university or school identified in the application.  If the candidate is applying for a position which requires a special license or certification, verify information with the pertinent licensing/certification agency.  Is the license/certification still valid?  Has the license/certification ever been suspended or revoked?  Only applications for positions requiring contact with minors may ask about criminal conviction history.  Schools may not inquire about an applicant’s conviction history on an application form for any positions that do not involve contact with minors.  Schools should not consider the following criminal history information:  Arrests or detentions that did not result in convictions;  Referral to, or participation in, a pretrial or post-trial diversion program;  Any conviction for which the record has been judicially ordered sealed, expunged, or statutorily eradicated;  An arrest, detention, processing, diversion, supervision, adjudication, or court disposition that occurred while the applicant was subject to the process and jurisdiction of juvenile court law;  A non-felony conviction for possession of marijuana that is two or more years old.
