Part III: Physical Stresses that Activate the FAT Programs

acids, and sugars. This chronic deficiency, just like any form of starvation, can activate the FAT Programs. Your body then stays hungry in the hope that you will eventually eat the nutrients you are starving for. Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are the big three—the things that our bodies need a lot of in order to function properly. Let’s look at fats first. Essential Fatty Acids The most glaring and pervasive form of nutritional starvation we experience today is for essential fatty acids. The term “essential” means that we have to have the nutrient and our bodies must get that nutrient from an outside source— just like a vitamin. Our bodies can manufacture certain types of fats (synthetic diamonds if you will), but we have no choice but to get essential fatty acids from the food we eat. The main types of essential fatty acids that we need on a daily basis are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Very few foods in our modern diet have omega-3s. There was a time when there was much less saturated fat in our diet and the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids was one-to-one. Today the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids is twenty-to-one. We now have proportionally twenty times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. This unnatural imbalance causes inflammation, which is a major FAT Program activator. 1 Countless scientific studies have shown that adding omega-3 fatty acids helps to switch off the FAT Programs. 2 In my opinion, it’s next to impossible to lose weight on a consistent, permanent basis without having a sufficient, daily supply of quality omega- 3 fatty acids. Other studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are effec- tive in treating all sorts of conditions. 3 To name a few:

• depression • bipolar disorder
