Part III: Physical Stresses that Activate the FAT Programs

greatest sources of antioxidants around. Antioxidants are essen- tial for neutralizing dangerous, unstable chemical compounds in the body that can damage cells and DNA. Fruit also has protein and, although it has a smaller amount than most foods that are traditionally eaten for their protein con- tent, the protein in live fruit is uncorrupted and contains the digestive enzymes required to facilitate easy assimilation. It’s not so much the quantity of protein that matters but how much of it can be assimilated. Fruit causes the blood to become more alkaline, which is also very important for the removal of toxins. Most of the food we eat, such as sugar, starches, meat, and grains, are all acid producing. An acid environment is where most diseases thrive. The action of trying to counteract the acid environment that these foods cause is a chronic source of stress that can activate the FAT Programs. The body is often forced to extract calcium from our bones and teeth to neutralize acid waste. This causes the body to become depleted of calcium, and calcium, we are just finding out, is truly essential for weight loss. 9 Make an Informed Choice I just talked about processed, refined, conventionally-farmed, “dead” carbs and how things like bread, cereal, pasta, sugar, pota- toes, and processed foods can be among your biggest enemies. Eat them as long as your body still craves them because eventu- ally the cravings will go away. However, in the meantime, any time you are presented with a choice between eating a meal that has these foods or one that doesn’t, choose the one that doesn’t. Only do this if you are genuinely indifferent to the choice . Choos- ing to eat healthier food when you truly don’t care about other alternatives is a perfect opportunity to speed things along. For example, if you are eating out and there’s a choice between lasagna with mashed potatoes and a side order of mac- aroni and cheese, or almond-crusted, grilled chicken with field greens drizzled in honey-balsamic vinegar dressing and young asparagus spears in hollandaise sauce, go with the chicken.
