Vitality: The Zero-Calorie Essential Nutrient

T here is another component to food that our bodies require, other than calories, protein, fats, carbohydrates, and various chemical nutrients, and that’s the life force in the food itself. When we are eating “live,” biologically active food, we are assimilating the life force of that food. Cultures around the world and throughout history have acknowledged that a subtle energy surrounds, permeates, and animates all living things. This energy enables life and translates thought into movement. It allows the autonomic nervous system to keep the heart beating and the blood circulating. When this energy is gone, the connection is severed and death results. The body then just becomes a highly organized structure of decom- posing chemicals. Vital energy has had many names throughout history— Ch’i/Ki/Qi, Prana, Shakti, life force, subtle energy, and more recently, orgone, and biophotons, to name just a few. In our own bodies this energy travels along particular paths, known as acupuncture meridians in Chinese medicine. They are also referred to as nadis in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. We can be devitalized, not only because we don’t have enough life force in our bodies but also because these energy channels, or meridians, can get blocked.
