It Doesn’t Count Unless It Enters Your Cells

E ven if we get all the nutrients our bodies are starving for, it still doesn’t mean that we are nourishing our bodies. We can’t necessarily make the assumption that what we put in our mouth will ultimately end up in our cells. After we eat some- thing, there are three hurdles that we have to cross before the food ends up nourishing our bodies: • We have to digest our food—break it down into simpler units that our bodies can then use as raw materials. • We have to be able to transport the raw materials to the cells of our bodies. • Once we have transported the nutrients to the cells, they have to be able to enter the cells. Transporting the nutrients from the digestive tract and then creating an internal environment that makes it easy for the cells to absorb the nutrients is assimilation—the final leg of the diges- tion process. If this doesn’t happen, we are simply not nourish- ing our bodies and, therefore, we continue to starve. Enzymes and Digestion One of the reasons that our ability to digest and assimilate nutri- ents is compromised is that we are deficient in digestive enzymes.
