to detoxify the body, and I recommend avoiding tap water. Chlorinated water, such as tap water, kills the friendly bacteria in the stomach. So what’s the solution to chronic dehydration? Drink two glasses of water first thing in the morning, a glass of water before each meal, and a little more during the meal. Then drink lots of water at night, as this will kill nighttime junk food cravings. Also, drink some water when you feel hungry to see if you were really thirsty. Sleep Apnea: Starving for Sleep and Oxygen There is a condition that many overweight people suffer from called sleep apnea. I personally had an extremely severe case of it; mine was almost life threatening. When you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing, sometimes hundreds of times, a night. You may not be aware that this is happening because you don’t actually awaken, but it does disturb your sleep. The result is that you never get the full, rejuvenating benefits of a good night’s sleep. The reason that your breathing is interrupted is that the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and cuts off the airway. This condition affects overweight people more because their neck is heavier, and the weight of the neck then collapses the airway. When I was at my heaviest, my neck measured twenty- two inches in diameter. No matter what position I lay in, once I started to fall asleep, I started suffocating. In the United States alone, millions of people have some degree of sleep apnea. 3 Sleep apnea reduces blood oxygen to dangerously low lev- els, so your body is starving for oxygen. You become chroni- cally exhausted, which causes junk food cravings. It also makes you more irritable and more prone to negative emotions that activate the FAT Programs. Just getting through the day when you have sleep apnea becomes a monumental challenge. I used to be so exhausted I would fall asleep in meetings, while driving my car, and while I was talking on the phone—even when I was the one talking!
