Even having 1 ounce of excess fat could be the difference between life and death. The right exercise can ambush your body into thinking that you are living in such an environment. It will make your body think it must be as thin and as fit as pos- sible in order to survive. When you’re playing a sport and you run as fast as you can to try to get the ball, your body assumes you’re doing so for only one reason: survival. Imagine for a moment that you’re playing soccer, and you get the ball thirty meters from the goal. You sprint with all your might to outrun the defender, and you take the shot—Score!!! What you’ve just done, in that instance, is cause the exact same hormonal sig- nals in your body that mimic running away from a lion in the African savannah. Your body has no idea that you’re voluntarily sprinting because you’re trying to score a goal. It doesn’t know what a game of soccer is or what a goal is, and it doesn’t care. If you’re moving that quickly and with such intense urgency, the only conclusion your body can make is that you must be doing so in order to stay alive. If you need to put on these sudden bursts of speed, your body will conclude that you are living in a place where there are predators lurking about. The Right Exercise to Deactivate the FAT Programs You can take advantage of this survival response and exploit it as a tool to make your body want to be thin. The right exercise isn’t simply a calorie-burning device; the right type of exercise turns off the FAT Programs. And here’s some good news: you don’t have to exercise excessively.
