It’s the state that artists achieve when they are in the state of flow and that state that brilliant inventors achieve when they’re touched by inspiration. Albert Einstein spent much of his time in SMART Mode. You also enter this state when you are painting, fishing, in “the zone” during a sporting event, watching an extremely cap- tivating performance, or at any time when you are either highly focused or very relaxed. Children spend a great deal of their time in SMART Mode; that’s why they’re so impression- able and why they can learn things so quickly. And if you don’t think that your kids are smart, ask yourself why they have the ability to learn a second language without a trace of an accent. If you don’t want to listen to the CD, you can still get into SMART Mode and make whatever changes you want. Here’s a really quick, easy way you can get into SMART Mode on your own: Spinning the Spine for Getting Into SMART Mode “Spinning the Spine” is one of the most effective tech- niques I’ve found for getting into SMART Mode. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. • Go into a room where you’ll not be disturbed for about ten minutes. • Sit with your spine straight and your eyes closed, and imagine a tiny beam of light circling around the first vertebra at the base of your spine. Each time the beam of light circles around your first vertebra, count until the tiny beam of light has circled ten times. • Imagine moving the tiny beam of light to the second vertebra and circling ten times. Count from eleven to twenty as it circles this vertebra.
