6 Using Positive Emotions to Turn Off the FAT Programs

I f you can develop the habit of automatically thinking posi- tively, you’ll be able to cut out 90 percent of the stress signals that trick your body into thinking that you’re not safe and that you need to be fat in order to be protected. Thoughts are habits; the more we think a certain way, the more we reinforce those thinking habits. You may be in the habit of thinking negatively, and being angry and fearful without even being aware of it. As a result, while you are driving to work, while you are making dinner, while you are getting dressed—in fact all day long—you are sending the follow- ing stress signal to your body: “I am not safe! Do something! I am not safe! Do something! I am not safe! Do something!” Your body doesn’t know exactly what do to, but for some of us, it turns on the FAT Programs. If that happens, you’ve got a problem. However, thinking positively is also a habit; the more you do it, the more ingrained it becomes. By being in the habit of posi- tive thinking, you’ll be doing away with the stress signals that are tricking your brain into turning on the FAT Programs.
