Visualization for Weight Loss -The Gabriel Method

Using Positive Emotions to Turn Off the FAT Programs

Technique: In the same way as the previous technique, sit alone quietly and say the word APPRECIATION. Say it slowly several times. Feel every cell of your body joining in the chorus. After a while, things and people will come to mind for you to appreciate. As each thing or person comes to mind, feel your appreciation for each one. Your body might come to mind. Say: “I APPRECIATE MY BODY.” Perhaps some aspect of your relationships or your career or your life will come to mind. Appreciate these things too. You can also practice this technique by saying: “I AM GRATEFUL.” Accept the Negative I once read in Ken Wilber’s book No Boundary that, if you want to get rid of any offensive aspect of yourself, and all those shad- owy, negative thoughts and feelings that creep up, the best way to do it is to accept them and integrate them into your conscious- ness. Wilber says these are aspects of yourself that you have rejected and alienated from what you think of as the real you. They are like naughty children that intentionally cause problems because they want some attention, even if it’s negative attention. These thoughts can cause all kinds of negative feelings. We can’t believe nice people could think such things, so we then judge ourselves as horrible people for having such miserable thoughts. But the more we fight and resist our negative thoughts, the more they pop up. This is because we are rewarding them with negative attention. If we reward children with negative attention whenever they do something wrong, they’ll continue to behave badly because negative attention is better than no atten- tion at all. It’s the same with our thoughts. But according to Wilber, the answer is to acknowledge these thoughts as a part of ourselves and to integrate them instead of alienating them. By doing so, the thoughts are satisfied, they feel loved, and they stop behaving like naughty children.
