think that you’re some kind of oddball. So what do you do? The obvious thing is to get a piece of paper and a pen, and draw a picture of a toilet. The moment you show the picture to a friendly local, you’ve made your point. It doesn’t matter if they only speak Swahili. If they’ve seen a toilet, they know exactly what you want and can point you in the right direction. Symbols and pictures are the universal language that everyone understands. It’s no different communicating to your own body. If you create a visual image of a thinner version of you, your brain will understand and work to make it happen. Problem solved. This is why visualization works so well. When you create a visual image of exactly how you want to look, you’re basically programming yourself to look that way. You’re talking to your unconscious mind and your animal brain, saying: More About SMART Mode The key to successful and effective visualization is to perform visualization when you’re in SMART Mode (see chapter 5). When we are in SMART Mode, our internal chatter quiets down. Our ability to focus and create a visual image is much stronger, so the message that we are sending to our unconscious mind is much clearer. It’s like looking at your reflection in a quiet pool of water. When the pool has no ripples, you can eas- ily see your reflection as clearly as when you are looking into a mirror. But if there are waves in the water, your reflection becomes completely distorted. The unconscious mind is the same; when it is quiet, it becomes like a pool with no ripples.
