Winter Driving Safety Tips When winter weather strikes, drivers face out-of-the-ordinary challenges when they get behind the wheel. Snow, slush or icy roads are involved in nearly one in four weather- related vehicle crashes. These conditions can make it harder for drivers to see, slow down and stop – all factors that can increase the chances of an accident. If you must travel during winter weather, preparing your car in advance, knowing the forecast and driving based on road conditions are three key ways to help you drive more safely. Following are some winter driving safety tips to help you prepare for the elements – before you face them – on the road. Preparing Your Vehicle  Make sure your car is stocked with a winter driving survival kit, including an ice scraper, a snow shovel and sand or salt.  Check your tires to determine whether it’s time to replace them or whether you need snow tires.  Make it a practice to keep your gas tank at least half full so you can run your engine and stay warm if you get stuck or stranded.  Keep your windshield wipers in good condition and your windshield fluid reservoir filled so you can clear snow and ice from your windshield. Driving for Winter Conditions  Take time to clear snow and ice off your car, including your windows, mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof and trunk BEFORE leaving your parking space.  Remember that speed limits are meant for dry roads, not roads covered in snow and ice. You should reduce your speed and increase your following distance as road conditions and visibility worsen.  Be cautious on bridges and overpasses as they are commonly the first areas to become icy. Remember, driving in winter weather can be challenging, even for experienced drivers. Slowing down, allowing increased time to come to a stop, wearing your seatbelt, devoting your full attention to the road and being aware of changing conditions can help you drive more safely.  Drive with your headlights on, and be sure to keep them clean to improve visibility.

The National Day of Safety!

Grounds Tips for your Home:

Its December and the weather outlook is that we are headed for a very cold blast, are your beds ready? Have you added mulch to buffer the temperatures? Plants should have 2 – 3” of mulch around the base but not against the trunk; if you plant has surface sensitive roots (Azaleas, roses etc.) you may add just a little extra mulch but remember to remove in spring. Container plants, being out of the ground and exposed is the same as being two zones cold- er and buffering should be considered when temperatures plummet, for temporary pro- tection, use a blanket, move containers together and wrap all as one, you can set them inside another container – you’re not looking to keep them but buffer the tempera- ture extremes. Smooth bark trees and young trees, cover the bark with bur- lap to prevent sun scald, this is especially true on trees that have a Southwest expo- sure. Burlap, not paper or tarp paper as sold in DIY stores, these seal and do not allow air passage further damaging the bark, remove in spring.

Reflections from the Well Over the next few months we will be sharing reflections from the scholarship recipients who took part in the SSC/Weathermatic trip to El Salvador to dig community wells. When I initially applied for SSC, Weathermatic, and Living Water’s trip to El Salvador, the idea of drilling a well really caught my eye. Throughout my college experience I have learned about the importance and lack of clean water in Central America and I was ecstatic to be able to bring this amenity to an entire community. The first day we arrived in the community was amazing. Kids and adults of all ages were there to greet us, feed us, and just make us feel welcome. I didn’t really get a sense of the community as a whole until we went on a tour. This hour of my life will stay with me forever. We saw turned over refrigerators used to collect rainwater, a handmade well, and a myriad of pets. During this time, I realized the impact we were about to make on their life by providing them access to reliable clean water for years. Each day a new act of kindness from the community made me feel more welcome and accepted. One group of women taught me how to make tortillas, even though it took them longer. Another woman walked me all the way to the latrine in the pouring rain when another member couldn’t make the hill. A group of boys helped carry chairs up a hill for us. But there is one moment that stood out among the rest. During my day of drilling, it had rained and we hit water, creating a perfect storm of being covered in mud. After the day was done and I had changed, there was still mud EVERYWHERE on my body. I was going to accept it, and just shower when we got back, but a group of ladies decided otherwise. They took a bowl of fresh water and proceeded to use it to clean my arms, my legs, my face, and everything that was caked in mud. This genuine kindness left me speechless, besides a few uses of “gracias.” To the people of Puente Viejo, compassion runs deep and I hope to bring that to someone else I the future. This community and trip has taught me so much about what it means to be grateful. Every time a kid showed me their artwork, colored for the first time, or was enamored over stickers I realized that small things could make a huge difference. We brought clean water, toothbrushes, and stickers. We left them with a confidence to be able to color and draw, some Frisbees, and memories. I left with a paper crown, appreciation for my life, and the ability to speak Spanish a little better. But they gave us more than ever expected. I could never thank them enough for opening their homes, lives, and hearts. This was the experience of a lifetime full of memories I can never forget and an outlook on life that will follow me always. Caroline Matlock from Texas A&M University:

SSC Facilities Condition Program or Deferred Maintenance

SSC’s FCP Program simplifies planning for your long-term facility needs. Within Maintenance Connection is our FCP software module. Easy to learn and simple to use, FCP Program gives you the tools you need to protect your facility and asset investments and conserve cash flow. PLAN PROACTIVELY Instead of continually replacing building components—or continually extending your deferred maintenance—you can look at your entire portfolio of properties and determine what work is needed now and what work is needed over the next several years.

Using FCP Program software for proactive planning, you can: • Put controls in place for consistent analysis of needs • Accurately determine building component lifecycles • Use the Facility Condition Index (FCI) to determine repair or replace • Avoid new construction when renovation proves cost effective • Reduce emergency repairs • Improve operational efficiencies • Justify capital expenditures

Facility Condition Index FCI = Deferred Maintenance

Current Replacement Value General guideline is that the FCI should be held around or below 5 percent.
