SHOCKS & SPRINGS COIL SPRINGS Common fitting tips

• Use an appropriate spring compressor tool when replacing coil springs. • Always fit coil springs in pairs, to ensure the vehicle doesn’t pull to one side when braking. • Check spring seats, and top mountings for damage before replacing broken or worn springs.

• After installation check that the springs are seated correctly, also check the wheel alignment • Replace shock absorbers at the same time as springs.

SHOCK ABSORBERS Common fitting tips

• Don't hold the piston rod with any tools as this will damage the surface of the piston rod and cause the oil seals to leak • Don't put any water, oil or other liquid inside the strut housing as this may damage the cartridge. • Don't use an impact wrench to tighten a nut onto a piston rod. This can make the torque higher than the recommended limit.

• Use only fitting parts (nuts, spacers, washers etc.) supplied with the shock absorber • Shock absorbers should always be fitted in pairs. • Ensure the vehicle is back on all 4 wheels before tightening upper mountings.

CLUTCH CLINIC

In recent years self-adjusting clutches have become the standard equipment fitted to many popular cars and vans, especially vehicles with high engine torque or with increased requirements for wear reserve. The principle is a simple one, a clutch system that is efficient and easy to use with a consistent feel and release point that previous clutch designs were unable to give. The SAC achieves a constant pedal load and a consistent bite point for on/off operation of the clutch throughout the entire lifespan of the clutch units. To ensure correct installation of the SAC clutch it is essential to use the special Self-Adjusting Clutch fitting tool. We still encounter far too many incidents where the SAC tool has not been used and the actuation system has been disturbed, a good number of these result in complete non operation of the clutch, normally only found after the installation has been completed. Using the tool in the correct manner will avoid having to complete the entire job for a second time, so it makes sense to use the tool for all clutch installations. Problem: Incorrect installation of Self Adjusting Clutches (SAC). Failure to use the SAC special fitting tool when fitting BMW SAC clutches. Result: Having to complete the entire job again, which is very costly and time consuming.

No attempt should be made to remove the centre retaining plate (Spider/Death Star) from the BMW assemblies before correct instaltion and tightening of the cover assembly mounting bolts has taken place. • Every new car homologated after 1 st of November 2012 must be equipped with TPMS. • Every new car produced after 1 st of November 2014 must be equipped with TPMS

WARNING! If the TPMS Fails a Warning Light will illuminate.

All tyre pressures should be checked along with all of the sensors using the correct diagnostic tool to ensure they are operating correctly.

This means that there has been a failure in the sensor or there has been pressure loss on one of the tyres and has become 25% under inflated.
