The following was among the business trans acted : Application under Section 16 THE Council considered, on a report from the Court of Examiners, an application by an intending apprentice for liberty to be bound under indentures for three years only. It was decided to grant the application. Application under Section 18 THE Council considered, on a report from the Court of Examiners, an application to the Chief Justice by an intending apprentice for total exemption

from the Preliminary Examination on the ground that he had passed the Leaving Certificate Examina tion. It was decided that no opposition should be offered to the application to the Chief Justice. Advertisement of Charitable Bequests ON a report from a Committee on a query from a member, the Council expressed the opinion that the executors under a will are entitled to deduct from a charitable legacy the expenses of advertising the bequest as authorised by the Charitable Donations and Bequests Act, 1867, but that the expenses which may be deducted do not include - the solicitor's costs in connection with the advertisement. Costs on the Granting of Leases THE Council considered a report from a Committee on the practice which should obtain in regard to costs on the granting of a lease at a fine and a rent, and decided to make a recommendation to the pro fession, which is published in this issue at page 56. Certificates of Discharge from Death Duties THE Council considered a report from a Committee with reference to correspondence received from the 53
